Lazarus Benson – “Sacrifice” Feat. T-Zank & Whitney Peyton – Single Review

Crazy.  I didn’t realize the guy had deleted his entire history at Spotify, pre-2025.

Not even sure what to say about that if I’m being completely honest with ya.  Lazarus Benson had some decent tunes before this year…but I think beyond that, I’m just not the kind of person that believes we can ever really leave the past behind.  We’re the sum total of our experiences and dreams combined.  Some of that can’t help but be tied to the past, but that’s what guides how we made our decisions in the present that lead to the future we’re looking to create for ourselves.  That’s the philosophical way of looking at it all I suppose…the easier way to assess a decision like trying to delete the past is that there’s no real way to erase things from the internet age, as much as some of us might wanna attempt to do it.  I approach that differently than many do though I guess…to me, everything is a part of a bigger journal or diary that helps dictate a direct path from today towards a better tomorrow.  But what do I know?

I dig this new track from Benson.  I wasn’t exactly over the moon about the last one I reviewed, called “Burn Down,” so it’s always encouraging to hear someone level-up on that next time out and exceed expectations.  Don’t get it twisted – Lazarus Benson is still making precisely the exact kind of music you’ve always known him to make – but on the bright side when it comes to “Sacrifice,” I feel like he’s got the kind of hooks that are destined to hold up over time, and that’s been a large part of what’s been missing from much of the material he’s put out in the past.  That’s not to say there hasn’t been plenty of reasons to tune into his music before – there are lots of things that matter beyond the hooks in a song…but I’ll admit, it’s kinda nice to hear the guy bring things all together so that his skills & songwriting can make the same impact.

Of course, it’s notable that he’s got some stellar guest stars in the mix as well.  T-Zank completely brings it to the opening verse to kick things off, and trust me when I tell ya that Whitney Peyton ain’t fuckin’ around either y’all…both these two emcees leave a lasting impression on ya with the bulletproof bars they put in.  T-Zank has got wild personality on the mic, and the frantic pace he’s spittin’ with in the opening verse of “Sacrifice” sure sets the standard up HIGH as high can be as this song kicks into gear.  Peyton might rap at a more noticeably controlled pace, sure…but she’s got tangible swagger y’all…the boldness she packs into every syllable and the presence in her performance is LARGE as large can be.  Even though they both have distinctly different styles, this pairing works, and they both go about handling their business like professionals to deliver majorly memorable moments here on “Sacrifice.”

Beyond that, LB drops in on the main hook, and goes scorched Earth with it.  I’m not saying that he’s necessarily bringing the heat on a lyrical level or saying something that you haven’t necessarily heard before in some capacity – but who gives a fuck?  When you hit your moment with this level of strength and ferocity, believe me, we’re all listening & paying full attention.  I kind of feel like this is the moment a lot of us have been waiting for from Lazarus when it comes to hooks…this is where he’s crossed the threshold from making something with commendable performances, to songwriting that we’ll remember.  If you don’t think it’s important to distinguish the differences, you’re probably not in the business of music makin.’  Lazarus has always committed to the music he’s made, but it’s been a struggle to really find that material that not only resonates with him, but for us as listeners as well.  I’m genuinely impressed with what he’s done on “Sacrifice.”  I don’t just take away points for no reason, and though I might make a few jokes or sarcastic comments along the way, I swear I’m not talking outta my ass either.  Benson had a ways to go with his songwriting and understanding what makes a hook really connect in a way that will lead to longevity…but I feel like what he’s got on “Sacrifice” could represent a significant breakthrough for the guy.  At the very least, this single deserves to be acknowledged as a very strong step forward in the right direction.  “Sacrifice” is a collaboration of locked-in, all-star talent as far as I can tell.  Every time I looped it around again in repeat, and T-Zank came outta the gate ready to crush everything in his path under the weight of his bars, I was hooked into listening to this cut all over again.  Then you get your first dose of the scorching heat that Lazarus brings to the hook, followed by the supremely stylistic sound of Whitney doin’ her thang with full confidence right after…I mean…it’s simply a case of being a no-notes situation – I wouldn’t change a thing about “Sacrifice” and feel like this is one of the best cuts I’ve heard from Benson’s catalog to-date without question.  Solid production, solid writing, solid performances…everything about this track stacks up to a serious win for all involved, from the three in collaboration on the m-i-c, to those of you listening on the other side of the speakers.
