Digital Escort – “End Of A Beautiful Beginning” – Single Review

When you see a track post up for the first time after like, six some odd years of an absence…that’s one thing – but when you see a couple of’em, you can start to believe that the comeback is a very real thing.  It was just at the end of last month that we reviewed Digital Escort’s single “Dirty,” stoked to have this band back in action after so freakin’ long, and now we’ve already got another cut to check out?  So soon?  This fucking spoiled life I’m living I tell ya…sometimes everything keeps coming up Milhouse.

So dear listeners, dear friends…or as DE would address you formally, “dear clients” – I think we can safely assume this band outta the seedy underground of the Chicago scene might actually be back to stay.  Which is a damn good thing, considering that I’ve long been shouting about the supreme power of Digital Escort and the kickass tracks they’ve been making…they’ve got the ability to really carve out a permanent place of their own in music’s history if they keep at what they’re doing.  On some level or another, I’ve enjoyed practically everything they’ve put out in the past to a degree…obviously like any artist or band, I’ve got my favorites & all, but make no mistake, when we’ve been talking about sheer potential, Digital Escort has always had more than most.  Now it’s time to make the most of it – “this game of life is way too short,” as they’ll tell ya themselves on their new single “End Of A Beautiful Beginning.”  To be real with ya, this is a really interesting track in their catalog…you can hear some noticeable changes right away.  For instance – how about the prominent guitar chops on display at the start of “End Of A Beautiful Beginning?”  Don’t get me wrong, there has always been a role for guitar to play inside their music for sure…but if I’m not mistaken, this would be the first time that I can recall it taking a lead role in that virtuoso-style you’d find in some of the world’s premier shredders music.  And I’ll fully admit, that actually threw me for a second or two – DE has always played with precision and skill – but it’s another thing entirely to hear a bend in their direction like you’ll hear at the start of “End Of A Beautiful Beginning.”  Or how about the chorus/main hooks of this new single?  I mean…there’s a real argument to be made that it’s the prettiest moment you’ll find in any Digital Escort song to-date – and yes…THAT, is unexpected.  I can fully get behind being surprised like this on both fronts from their instrumentation to their writing, it’s crystal clear that DE aren’t just back in action, but that they’re also trying new things to push themselves forward creatively.

Don’t PANIC though Digital Escort fans…I’m not suggesting that they’ve sold out – they’re evolving right in front of our ears, and you should be encouraging that.  Similar to how one of my favorite indie bands of all-time called Idiot Pilot found incredible new ways to add some accessibility to the music just prior to them calling it quits forever…they’re opening up opportunities for their fan-base to expand even further.  Sure you’re gonna have the occasional asshole come along that’s gonna be like, “Swimming With The Fish” was Digital Escort at their best, from way back in 2016…but you gotta live with that shit.  As a band, all they’ve gotta do is make the music they wanna make, and they’ll be just fine.  “Let’s have fun before it’s too late” – that’s the only responsibility they need to commit to as far as I’m concerned.  You get what I mean I’m sure…there’s certainly no question that “End Of A Beautiful Beginning” isn’t the most hardcore cut you’re gonna hear from a source where you expect’em to come from, but as their audience – as their CLIENTS – you should always hope that this band continues to grow and keep things interesting for themselves.  Because lemme tell ya folks…it’s when you don’t, that it becomes time to walk away…and considering we almost lost these guys before, back the fuck off and let’em test the waters on what else they’re capable of, will ya?  This single is still new to me too – I don’t know where I’d put it on the scale of awesomeness they’ve put out with their music to-date or where it’d rank in my list of Digital Escort favorites, but they’re playing the living daylights outta this song, and that counts for a ton in the world I’m livin’ in.  The commitment is there, the interest is there, and the chops in their musicianship & writing are perhaps on display more than they’ve ever been…so heck yeah, there’s a whole lot about “End Of A Beautiful Beginning” that I know I dig already.  The most you’re gonna find me conceding to ya, is that I think they’re probably got themselves a chorus that easily outshines what they create in the verses of this tune…but don’t go mistaking that for any kind of complaint when it’s not.  If anything, that’s a genuine compliment for what they pulled off in the chorus of this new single – “End Of A Beautiful Beginning” has a real degree of universal accessibility that, let’s be real here, Digital Escort hasn’t always chosen to put out there in the past…and in my opinion, it really works in their favor.

So let’s see how this plays out!  I liked “Dirty” from last month, and I can recognize they’re testing out new things with the way that “End Of A Beautiful Beginning” turned out here…my theory is that Digital Escort is in the process of a full-scale re-launch, and they’re making music that is sure to bring back their old fans every bit as much as earn them new ones by the fact that they’re expanding their sound more.  They’re heading in the right direction if you ask me…and I’d bet on them surging forward through the rest of 2023 ahead…remember you heard it here first dear readers, dear friends, and “dear clients,” respectively.
