Moon And Aries – “Resolutions” – Single Review

Hmmmmm…let’s see, let’s see…what do I think about the latest from Moon And Aries

It’s actually kind of hard to assess what I really think about this new single from Moon And Aries when it comes right down to it if I’m being objective…I feel like there are some fantastic positives, and there’s also a little bit of a case of trying to bang the square peg through the round hole.  They know I love’em and that I’m only ever gonna be honest about what I hear in their music as I am with all of ya…so I’ll put it this way – the positives far outweigh any potential criticism, and any comments I’d have would only be surrounding my own personal taste anyway.  As far as their level of professionalism and dedication is concerned, they bring quality to everything they do…there’s never an issue there, so from that point, it really only becomes a matter of what resonates with listeners the most.  I might be a critic or a journalist or whatever it is ya wanna call me, but I am still a listener too.

To be completely fair to Moon And Aries, this sounds like it’s quite a bit different for them in some ways, at least in terms of the beat from Tom in this particular cut.  They remain grounded by the sound of Jordana’s vocals…I think that’s one of the strongest aspects of their music in terms of the duo’s identity; that’s how we tend to recognize them as the music tends to change surrounding her vocals.  As I’ve been tellin’ ya over the course of listening to their tunes over the past couple years, they create material that has genuine depth to it, and in that respect, “Resolutions” still checks the box for a solid win.  Jordana is sensational in the way she sings this song, and the music from Tom is as lively, entertaining, and perfectly produced as ever.  In terms of the hook at the heart of the chorus, I can wholeheartedly say that I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anything better from them, or at the very least, there’s no part I can think of that has a higher degree of accessibility when it comes to what will attract the masses.  As I’ve often said on these pages of ours, one great part in a song can completely define it – and I have absolutely zero doubt that as a result of them discovering this amazing chorus they’ve created for “Resolutions,” they’ll win over the people listening from one side of the map to the other.  It’s the kind of hook strong enough to spawn 1000 remixes…I wouldn’t at all be surprised to find a song like this going on to live several different lives.  All in all, the positives that’ll be generated from the main hook in “Resolutions” are theoretically countless.

As for the verses, I’m probably a bit more undecided about’em in this particular tune.  Don’t get me wrong – they do work…I suppose I’m more curious as to the distribution of the workload in a song like this one.  Lemme explain.  If I’m being real with ya, I’d tell you that we’re looking at a single that’s DNA is something to the effect of 20% verse and 80% chorus if we’re talking about what’s likely to be the main source of appeal for the masses out there listening.  When you end up with a hook that’s as gloriously effective and stunning as the chorus of “Resolutions” is, you almost don’t even need to worry about the rest of the song carrying any weight at all, you feel me?  Anyhow…I think y’all probably get where I’ve been going with this – it’s not about good or bad so much as it’s about closing the gap as best you can when it comes to the distribution of what works in a song.  We’re always gonna want, or at least typically expect that a chorus will take a track to the next level, but it’s another thing to end up in a situation where you might be leaving your verses in the dust, or vice versa, whatever the case might be.  Again, there are always exceptions, there are no actual rules anyone has to follow at all, and contrast can be massively effective too – sometimes we need part-A to make part-B come out sounding as amazing as it does, make sense?  I’m simply challenging a pair of great songwriters to continually bring it to every moment of their writing in the same way that they do with the performances they put in – and if that makes me the villain, y’all know it’s a role I’ve always been willing to play in order to help assist artists & bands get the best from themselves.  I like what I hear in the verses of “Resolutions” – but I absolutely, unequivocally LOVE what I hear in the chorus of this song…it’s award-worthy stuff, and I suppose that’s the difference.  “Here with me/I am your answer” is an incredibly beautiful hook and it’s genuinely enchanting in the way that Jordana sings it – that’s entirely the main reason to return to this new single of theirs.  It’s always up to the artist or band creating the music as to what they’re willing to accept, in this case, Moon And Aries…and it becomes tougher to tell if they’re settling in the verses, or moving too quickly when you consider how much music they’ve been making overall.  As in, if they took another month to make “Resolutions” would the weight shift to something more like a 45% verse and 55% chorus?  Possibly!  And of course, possibly not as well.  See how us armchair coaches get to hedge our bets?  Anything I could ever say to these two professionals would only ever be just things for them to consider as they surge on forward from here.  The reality is, there are many times where we’re going to write that one incredible piece of a song that really can’t help but seem to take the entire spotlight like the Earth digs gravity…and that could very well be the case when it comes to “Resolutions” and how much the chorus pulls every one of us in to listen.  Moon And Aries are currently in the process of working their way towards their next record, and rumored to be pumpin’ out all kinds of singles along the way…if I remember correctly, they found their strongest material towards the end of their trilogy of EPs before their full album Break The Matrix came out too.  Piece by piece, everything comes together in the end – if things sound as great as they do at the heart of a song like “Resolutions,” they’re potentially gonna blow some minds by the time their next album is all finished and ready to roll, mark my words.
