Jaydii & Supreme Khay – NAHIMASTAY
Jaydii & Supreme Khay – NAHIMASTAY – EP Review
Doin’ their thang straight from the drop, “Sunset Blvd Pt. 2” is pretty much all the confirmation that anyone would need to know this collaboration between Jaydii & Supreme Khay is gonna work out A-OK. We’re used to quality when it comes to Jaydii and his crew…it’s a name that you should be familiar with by now from past reviews here and making our top ten list back in 2021. Supreme Khay definitely has the right type of vibe to be a perfect pairing in this collaboration…you add in Blvff to handle the studio boards, and it’s clear that NAHIMASTAY has got everything it needs to secure a victory in the court of public opinion. Decked out with explicit tags from start to finish, this lineup of six starts impressive and stays that way. Versatile, diverse, fresh, relevant…you could use any of those words to describe what you’ll hear on NAHIMASTAY…and you could probably add shocking in there as well, at least when it comes to “Sunset Blvd Pt. 2.” We’re rappin’ bout fuckin’ here…and we spend a lot of time trying to figure out whether or not we’re strappin’ on that jimmy hat or goin’ raw dog…you know, those crucial conversations you’ve probably had with your own loved one, or tinder date…you get it. This WORKS though…don’t get it twisted – personality, skill, performance…these things MATTER, and they’ve got checkmarks running straight through the win column when it comes to all that. From the speed and precision of their bars, to the melody of their hooks, to the details you’ll hear runnin’ throughout the background of this opening track, they’ve put the work in and they’re getting results. They might not care if they “hit or not” – but rest assured, if they’re bustin’ nut like this on wax, they’re probably pulling just fine when it comes to the ladies out there too. There are no weak points in this set. Part of me felt like MAYBE I’d say “Sunset Blvd Pt. 2” was the track I wasn’t as jazzed about as the rest, but to be truthful with ya, I don’t feel that way really…the balance of strengths in the material on this EP is freakishly special and pretty damn even across the board. I’ve got my favorites as I always do of course, and I do feel like there are two tracks on this record that stand out that much more than the rest – BUT – if we’re talkin’ about the quality of the set overall, there are really no weak points on NAHIMASTAY.
All that good stuff being said, listen to the vibe on “Hot Soup” will ya? This is what you wanna hear on a record y’all…”Hot Soup” is essentially the definition of what single-worthy sound is all about! The homie Blvff, who produces the music throughout this whole record, has pretty much outdone himself and exceeded all expectations with this one. I’ve been tellin’ Jaydii over the past couple years to not be too concerned about adding a little GIRTH to the material and expanding his tracks in the reviews I’ve written on his music – and “Hot Soup” is complete confirmation on WHY that’s been the advice I’ve been givin’ him. Not that I’m takin’ credit for it, don’t get me wrong, I’m just another voice in a sea full of’em out here on the internet – but the point is this: when you’ve got THE vibe goin’ on, make the most of it, you know what I mean? “Hot Soup” is a JUSTIFIED nearly four minutes…no dead space, just that straight FIRE comin’ atcha the entire time. Who ain’t gonna support that, you follow me? If THIS is the level of intensity, rhythm, groove, and hooks they’re capable, then look the fuck out y’all…Jaydii and Supreme Khay prove they’re an unstoppable force when they’re dropping heat like this. All the right attention to detail is where you wanna find it…all-in-all, “Hot Soup” contains the kind of addictive vibe and energy you wanna listen to on constant repeat. There are many songs out there in this world that need someone to help champion them, advocate for them, and speak up on their behalf – “Hot Soup” ain’t one of those. If you can’t hear how damn amazing this song is, then you’re well beyond my help.
While I’m definitely all for expanding the length of short cuts, I’d also readily admit that not every song completely needs to be longer. That being said, when you go from about four minutes in length to just a two minute track, you do feel a noticeable difference as you listen – like, “Need A Vacation” flies right by in that blink & you’ll miss it type of way. I also think that, to be truly fair to “Need A Vacation” is to understand the position it’s in and how hard it would be for it to stand out at all. When you consider the shortness of its length, that’s one thing – but when you realize it’s wedged right in between the two best tracks on the EP, that’s a whole other battle. I’m confident in it though…I dig the additional flavor you’ll find in this vibe…the music’s unique, and that could potentially be an asset when it comes to getting the attention of the people out there. I still think it’s gonna take a spin or two through NAHIMASTAY to fully appreciate this track, or even notice it in comparison to cuts like “Hot Soup” and “Godiva” to follow, but ultimately, that’s natural for the course of any record. I think with the rise of Latin vibes out there in the scene right now, or tracks of cultural influence reaching the tops of the charts in Rap/Trap/Hip-Hop right now all across the board, you might actually find a cut with the kind of character that “Need A Vacation” has exceeding expectations. Jaydii and Supreme Khay ain’t gonna let ya down, that I can vouch for…they keep their focus up and on the quality of these tracks all the way through this EP from start to finish. “Need A Vacation” is built on a strong rhythm & pulse…a bold and robust beat you can feel, and emcees that bring nothing but their A-game to music that deserves it.
“Godiva” is a perfect example of the hybrid vibes that Jaydii has often flexed in his solo work, and the proof your ears need to know that it works. He’s goin’ HIGH UP on that falsetto here…and while that’s clearly reaching the ceiling of what he’s capable of, it ends up creating that whole charming effect that you get when you know an artist is stretching out what they do to keep YOU entertained. Similar to what you’d find in something like Chance The Rapper, you know what I mean? Sure, there’s an argument to be made that you’re probably not tuning in for the singing when you put a record like this one on, but you’ll be more than pleasantly surprised by what you find. You know I’d tell ya otherwise if that wasn’t the case y’all, but fact are facts – “Godiva” is among the best cuts on this record without question. At shorter than 2:30, don’t get me wrong…I’d probably have personally taken even more of this track if I had the option, but I think this one’s about the right length for the idea. Sound-wise, it’s pretty damn irresistible, so you end up in this position on our side of the speakers where you naturally want a whole lot more of what you hear…but from the other side of the coin, if you’re Jaydii and Supreme Khay, you wanna make sure a cut ain’t gonna wear out overnight either. They played this one right in my opinion…you get the option to repeat if you want more of it, and chances are, you definitely will. “Lately I’ve been thinkin’ bout what’s next” – me too homies…and that’s pushing repeat for at least one or two more spins…maybe five or six…no more than ten, surely…for tonight anyhow. Tomorrow’s a whole new day, and you betcha, I plan on playing “Godiva” a shit ton more, loud & proud for all to hear.
“Reese’s Pieces” has one of the best performances you’ll find from Supreme Khay without a doubt. It should be noted that, for first-time listeners to the homies in this collaboration, you might even find that you have trouble figuring out who’s who and all that…they’ve got slightly different tones, but highly similar styles…so don’t get me wrong, even I had to do a double-take here and there in wondering which one of’em was handling what set of bars throughout the course of this EP. But if I eventually figured it out, I promise that you can too. In any event, what’s real is that they both complement each other’s own style and create a massive level of cohesion in this set-list as a result – they perform on a unified front, and that kinda shit matters to me y’all. You wanna hear two artists that are on the same page, executing with confidence and vision for the sound they wanna put out through your speakers, which I felt like they accomplished with all six tracks on NAHIMASTAY. “My verses flow with dopamine” – that’s the truth as far as you’ve ever heard it dear readers, dear friends…pay some fuckin’ attention! Smoother than smooth, you can’t lose no matter who is on the mic in this collaboration, but notably, I felt like Supreme Khay made his presence known on this track. Pound for pound, bar for bar, “Reece’s Pieces” brings out this collaboration’s best if we’re talkin’ about the quality in their performances and strength of their rhymes…hooks wise, I’d probably still lean towards “Godiva” having the most for you in that respect, and “Hot Soup” being the most single-worthy track of the set. All-in-all, this EP is jammin’!
Talk about LENGTH though y’all…”Rear View” expands past the five minute mark, which would have been practically unheard of on a Jaydii record a couple years ago. Dude’s evolving as an artist, and you can hear that in a variety of ways throughout this lineup of songs. Supreme Khay could certainly have a lot to do with that…sometimes it just takes another professional in the mix for some additional inspiration or a bit more heat in the kitchen to really make us cook, you know what I’m sayin’? “Rear View” has everything workin’ for it – but let’s be real here, this collaboration hasn’t shown a hair outta place. From the rhymes of Supreme Khay and Jaydii coming out with such flawless flow and seamless syllables, to the beats produced by Blvff – they know their material inside & out and were clearly prepared for this moment. That in itself shows you the type of dedication it takes to reach success by any definition…and more importantly, they’ll never have to endure the pain that so many artists and bands tend to experience, continually hearing the 5% of a record they could have done better if they just put in more time and effort. These dudes will be stoked about what they’ve done with this EP for years to come…it’s pretty much the perfect mix of professionalism and street cred combined, you feel me? Like…they’re right on the money for what any record company would be proud of representing, and they don’t sound like they’re pandering to that shit even one iota. Like I said from the start, they’re just doin’ what they do, handlin’ their business…and as a result, you end up with completely relevant ideas, vibes, and a sound that’s tight like it’s a big budget studio deal, without remotely damaging their independent credit. Jaydii’s one of the few out there in the scene I know of that I can actually expect quality from, and know that it’s coming whenever he puts out something new. Because he’s focused, he’s hungry for the mic, and he’s not thinking about what’s happening right now so much as thinking a whole step ahead of the rest. You combine that kind of cleverness with the skills and confidence of an emcee like Supreme Khay that clearly has the same level of talent & vision, and the professionalism of a producer like Blvff…I’m tellin’ ya folks…this is where it starts, but there’s no tellin’ how far it could really go. Definitely a collaboration I’d want to hear continue – they’ve got the vibe, they’ve got the material, and they know how to execute…I’m all about NAHIMASTAY & completely sure that you’ll dig it as much as I do.
