I hope you’re ready for this shit. We played this shit on the SBS Podcast earlier today – and chances are, you’re here to check this shit out via video-screen now, based on all the stuff I had to say about Cool Ass on the show; but even if you haven’t checked it out yet, believe me when I say, you SHOULD be ready for this shit by now, because we have ALL had a shit-ton of preparation for a moment such as this one.
Riding at the top of the crest of the tsunami-sized wave of pandemic-influenced tunes that are no doubt about to land directly on top of us all over the years to follow, is Toronto, Canada’s own Cool Ass and this single aptly named “Fuck You COVID-19.” There’s lots to dig on when it comes to what you’ll hear & what you’ll see in the video for this tune, lest anyone out there be confused by the label of ‘this shit,’ I can assure you it’s a term of endearment. As in, come on over here & check out this Cool Ass shit, man. You feelin’ me now? Okay then, let’s carry on…
Describing quite accurately how so many of us out there are collectively feeling, not just in the words, but in the way they’re expressed, is what makes this cut by Cool Ass as effective as it becomes. Ask yourself honestly…how are you feeling right now? Go ahead and take a moment, we’re all about introspection here at SBS…but for real dear readers, dear friends…how are you doing?
Frustrated as fuck I bet. Embracing the insanity a bit too much at this point, yeah? Stir crazy? Check!
So why not take a moment to be as direct & explicit as necessary to say how you really feel, like Cool Ass has done with “Fuck You COVID-19?” Because I’m tellin’ ya folks…just singing along with this cut feels cathartic…FUN…and oddly enough, like we’re not all so damn isolated right now. It’s definitely a firm reminder of the situation we’re in and how fucked up it really is, but at the same time, because it’s so massively relatable and explores such universally shared sentiment…it’s weirdly comforting too. I know, I know…here I go gettin’ all serious and taking a deep dive into what’s obviously a song made to create genuine laughs & all – which it does – but what can I say, it’s just who I am and how I do my own thang. You heard a whole bunch of what I had to say about “Fuck You COVID-19” on the SBS Podcast earlier today…and if you didn’t, click here after you’re finished reading the rest of this article – but suffice it to say that the comedy is more than apparent and a huge driving force in the overall appeal of this song.
But let me make my case for why it’ll give you a bit more bang for your buck when it comes to how you wanna spend your time and why you should check out this video they’ve got supporting “Fuck You COVID-19” – because if I’m being real with ya, Cool Ass deserves props for what’s been pulled off here. We might all be stuck in isolation, but through the magnificent power of the ol’ internet, this single goes worldwide through a collaborative performance filled with people from all over the place, all more than happy to dance & sing their hearts out in a sincere effort to say “Fuck You COVID-19” loud & proud. Try to tell me you’re not feelin’ sentiment like that – you know you feel the same at this point, no matter where you are in the world. With its neon-synth sounds and authentically Cool Ass vibes, this single’s got more than enough hooks that’ll grab ya equally hard as the lyrics – and seeing this whole fuck you to the pandemic come to life on screen in such a celebratory way tells ya that the people are definitely feelin’ it too. I could take it further into the deep end if ya like, and commend Cool Ass highly for creating just as much awareness to important issues while also providing so much fun & entertainment in the process…but I need to save some room for amazing literary quotes I now can’t live without. Like, “I hope I’ve got enough bum wad” and “I miss so much, this really sucks, at least now I know for sure who really gives a fuck” – these are statements I don’t just hear, I feel, 100%. I’m sure you do too. All that being said, as clever or Cool Ass as any one line of the verses might be to ya…in the end it’s all about getting to the release of shoutin’ out “Fuck You COVID-19” and gettin’ down with your badass self in isolation, wherever you are, knowing that a whole buttload of people out there are doin’ the same.
Because this shit IS Cool Ass…I hope you were ready for it.
