Shout-out Canada! Ten years ago when we started our annual Best New Sound quests after only being around on the internet for about a year and a half, we had no idea we’d find so many talented artists & bands over the years to follow. At the end of that first year, our winner turned out to be a Canadian-based band called West My Friend – and so it actually seems quite fitting that here in our tenth year of recognizing our Best New Sound, that the top name on our list returns to Canada at long last! Over on the east side of the country, not too far away from where sleepingbagstudios was located from 2016 – 2022, you’ll find a remarkable composer, artist, and human being by the name of Milana Zilnik. Not only did she put an extraordinary amount of time, effort, and vivid details into her brand-new album called Metamorfosi, but she created an authentic concept record that genuinely connected her ideas to her music. It’s a tough thing to accomplish under most circumstances – but it’s an even more monumental achievement when you manage to do it through an instrumentally-based album like Metamorfosi. Still, Milana didn’t just pull it all off flawlessly, she thrilled listeners with the results in what had to be one of the most compelling and adventurous records of the year for anyone that gave it a spin. Metamorfosi wasn’t just a typical wander through the looking glass, it was completely its own tale inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic works, filled with absolutely spellbinding sound and passionate performances from its start to finish. From the immaculate selection of sound, to Milana using her voice as an instrument, to the impeccable compositions and award-worthy instrumentation, listening to Metamorfosi was a true treat for the ears and the mind combined. It’s a record that shows Milana’s visionary talents in audible form, through a lineup of songs that proves she’s one of the most gifted composers & artists to be found in this music scene we share. Dramatic, theatrical, beautiful, and mysterious – Metamorfosi was unique by every conceivable definition, and entertaining beyond words – Milana Zilnik is significantly special & creates breathtaking art in her music, and deserves to be recognized as our BEST NEW SOUND this year.
