The Afro Nick – “Get There Before Noon (LA Mix)” – Single Review

Alrighty y’all, we’ve got the one, the only, The Afro Nick in review here today!

It’s okay if that name is brand-new to you, it was new to me too.  In fact, as far as I can tell, “Get There Before Noon (LA Mix)” is the dude’s debut tune…so really, unless you know him personally, I’m thinking The Afro Nick should be new to most of us, yes?  Far from his first rodeo though…according to his bio online, he used to be in a band called Stray Blue as far back as 2009, and spent many years touring throughout his homeland in Crete, Greece, before disbanding and eventually making the move to LA.

And there you have it – you’re all caught up…or at least, you know about as much as I do.  I dig what I hear in this guy’s music though…it’s pretty obvious from the moment you push play on “Get There Before Noon (LA Mix)” that The Afro Nick has no qualms about doing things differently with his Indie-Rock sound.  Listen to all those wonderfully weird beeps and boops in the background will ya?  It’s a great way of going about getting me interested at the start, that much I can tell you.  As this debut single started up, it sounded like there was a computer somewhere in the distance, having a digitalized seizure, and while that might not necessarily be the kind of thing that lures everyone in at the beginning of a new listening experience, I can assure you that it gets my attention.  It’s a fun way to start things up without a doubt, but I’m proud to report there’s a whole lot more to The Afro Nick than just a couple of clever sounds.  For example…the slide guitar in the mix – that’s awesome.  The sentiment at the core of his lyricism – that’s inspiring.  The music overall, is clearly competent and well thought-out.  The passion in the way that The Afro Nick sings however, was the real clincher – that’s what sold me above all these other great things…the way he goes about singing this song really became something special, in my opinion.

And you know something?  I don’t even think that’s how I felt on the first spin or two through it!  I’ll admit, you don’t find The Afro Nick’s accent too often in the music found in North America, so it did take a couple runs through “Get There Before Noon (LA Mix)” before I snapped out of focusing on the uniqueness of his voice, and was able to really appreciate the song as a whole.  Even then, I still went back and forth about what I did and didn’t love about this track – like…I’m still not entirely sure about what I think about the way he wrote the first verse or two…all I know is that by the end, I wanted to stand up and cheer from what The Afro Nick had sung on this single.  When it comes to what he’s singing about…I think this song is all aces from start to finish…it’s about rebellion, it’s about staying true to yourself…”Get There Before Noon (LA Mix)” is about LIVING LIFE to its maximum potential, and going after every second of it with everything that you’ve got – and I’m always into an inspiring message like that.  While it’s true that The Afro Nick is sticking very firmly to a rhyme-scheme for his lyricism…to the point where he’s practically clinging onto it so hard he’d leave marks on it with his fingernails from the way he digs in so deep – I felt like what gets him around that, is the conviction you hear in his voice.

There is real meaning in behind his words, and you can tell it’s personal by the way he sings his song.  Do you know how many quirks and strange things all of us listeners would happily overlook just to hear the kind of passion this guy has?  I’m tellin’ ya…he easily overcomes any objections I might have had to the rhyming pattern in the lyrics and its short, choppy lines, simply because The Afro Nick goes ALL-IN with every word he’s singing, and as a result, you FEEL what he’s singing about – make sense?  Sure it helps that the rest of everything you’ll hear is flawless as well…I love the rhythm section in this song, I love the digitalized fun added in, and I love the guitars…it all stacks up to an easy win when you combine it together with the character of The Afro Nick, the growing strength in the song that you hear as it plays on, and the way the main hook continues to resonate within you like a mantra from the moment you hear it.  You can tell from his bio online that The Afro Nick leads his life in such a way that he’s pursuing his dreams at all times – and listening to “Get There Before Noon (LA Mix)” will likely inspire YOU to do the same.  I get fully amped up from the breakdown in this single on-forward…it’ll makes you wanna LIVE LIFE like The Afro Nick has been doing, and find that courage required to turn dreams into reality.

This all works very well in my opinion…the more you listen, the more you’ll dig what The Afro Nick has created with this song.  Love the backing vocals, love the solo, love the mix…love the depth you’ll find in a moment like this, where the meaning you’ll find in what’s been expressed through the music and the microphone will continue to surge within you, long after the song is finished.  Definitely a solid debut from The Afro Nick – I dig “Get There Before Noon (LA Mix)” and I would absolutely listen to more from this guy at any time.  There’s something very inspiring about The Afro Nick that we can all learn from.
