SOUTHDOGROCK – “Ugly Brothers”
SOUTHDOGROCK – “Ugly Brothers” – Single Review
Ugly or not, here I come!
For a lot of folks out there, the art of making music revolves around having a lil’ fun, you dig? Not everything we create has gotta be taken so damn seriously – sometimes it can be equally effective to create a catchy tune for the sake of having a good time, and leave the drama at the door instead. Take this track from SOUTHDOGROCK for example…”Ugly Brothers” is very much written in a completely tongue in cheek style, intentionally being provocative, but in a way that actually brings a smile to your face, whether it’s ugly or not. I had a great time listening to this single, and I’m quite sure that I won’t be the only one that feels that way. Don’t mistake having a little bit of fun for being unprofessional – SOUTHDOGROCK brings the heat to their new single “Ugly Brothers” and keep this cut movin’ & groovin’ with way more appeal to it than you might assume at first. Somewhere between the realms of like, a song from Weird Al and something from the crazier side of Thomas Dolby, you’ll find a track like “Ugly Brothers” making a nice home for itself on the playlists of music fans that like to keep things on the lighter side & enjoy a bit of humor in the music they listen to. Ain’t nothing wrong with that as far as I’m concerned – in fact, I’d tell you there’s still a ton of room out there in the music-scene for tracks that incorporate a good sense of humor into’em…it’s not the path most tend to take, but in that sense, it leaves the space wide open for a collaborative effort like SOUTHDOGROCK to completely thrive within.
I am definitely both pleased, and a little bit surprised by this crew of talent as well. Florian Döppert slays the harmonica on the way into this single, and continues to do a great job on the vocals thereafter as well. The guitar from Salva Balbo is skilled & highly reliable, the bass from Frank Heider is locked right into the vibe, as are the drums from his partner in the rhythm section, Martin Hugenschmidt. Frank Schultz deserves a shout-out of his own for rocking the keyboards – I loved everything he brought to the table in this song, and he’s got some major moments well deserving of the spotlight whenever it shines on him. Lyrically…I mean, it’s got spots where it’s excellent, spots where I think it’s actually more funny than perhaps it’s even intended to be, and a couple parts here & there that reach for a quick rhyming word rather than what might have been a better fit, but for the most part, I’m happy with what we find there as well. Like I said, “Ugly Brothers” is surprisingly tight from all angles, and I feel like the majority of people that stumble upon this tune are gonna be stoked on what they find here. What I can tell you for sure, is that “Ugly Brothers” is probably way catchier than you’ll even realize at first, and you’ll end up singing this song around the house after just a couple spins through it. Then you’ll go back to listen again…and again…and again, because it really IS that much fun. SOUTHDOGROCK is clearly having a great time doing what they’re doing, and that excitement & joy has no problem attracting our attention.
So heck yeah…thumbs up from me. The lyric video is entertaining, and I dig that too. Could probably use a bit of editing on the actual lyrics to make sure they match & all, but hey, it’s way better than anything I could do in a language other than English, so I’m fine with it as is. In fact, there were a couple moments where choosing a different word ended up making me laugh even more, like when you see “your ugly like a tout” onscreen…honestly, that couldn’t make any less sense than it already doesn’t, but somehow, that’s part of the charm of SOUTHDOGROCK and it simply made me smile. You can hear the words are different than what you see…and hey, who knows…maybe they’re actually onto something here – it’d definitely be funny to see a lyric video where nothing ended up matching at all between what you see & what was sung, wouldn’t it? As for the case of “Ugly Brothers,” they get it close enough – and beyond that, just about every lyric video I’ve ever seen from every artist & band out there contains an unintended error or two, so cut SOUTHDOGROCK a little slack, will ya? As I’ve been telling you from the start – we don’t always need to take everything in music so seriously…so lighten up & light one up, and have yourself a good ol’ time watching their new video and turning up their new single “Ugly Brothers.”
