Roxy Mayhem – “Fuck Donald Trump”
Roxy Mayhem – “Fuck Donald Trump” – Single Review
“You know I’m starting to think this song is a mistake…”
I mean…time is gonna tell on that one I’d reckon. MAGAts are gonna MAGAt, because that’s what they do…and if you wanna be the one to rile’em up, then I’m sure you already know how they’re gonna feel about it. Hell, they’ll probably be just as pissed off at me because I was willing to review this song too.
Like my Canadian ass gives a flying fuck. Sing it with me y’all – “Fuck Donald Trump!”
So…look…it’s probably fair to say there will likely be a flurry of these types of songs coming out over the next four years or so…that’s the job of art and music…to be the objective documentarian of what we experience. It’s also the unofficial job of Punk-inspired tunes to lead the charge when it comes to the resistance…and I appreciate that. I might have a few issues with some of “Fuck Donald Trump,” but I think I can assure you that none of them are political. I have no problem whatsoever saying that I fucking hate that orange motherfucker with just about every fiber of my being, and if you find yourself reading this review being pissed off about that, feel free to unfollow me, or whatever makes you feel better…I could not possibly care less. We’ve all got a voice – you’re welcome to use yours however you like to. Here on these pages of ours, you’ll find no support whatsoever for the hate-monger in-chief.
I’ll be real with ya though Roxy Mayhem…I feel like you’re hedging your bets a little bit here, and that there’s an ambiguous sarcasm in this song that’s likely intentional, but hopefully not misunderstood. The celebratory vibe…the references to gays being deported…the shout-out to Q-Anon…it’s all very Punk stuff at the end of the day, but were it not for the chorus shouting “Fuck Donald Trump” and a bit of the rest of the lyricism being somewhat buried into the mix by the music, I think there’s almost too much of a chance that Trump supporters might have even felt like this was an anthem FOR them, instead of against’em, you know what I mean? I know I get what Roxy’s singing about here, and I think most folks with half a brain in their head will too…but if there’s one crowd of folks that don’t have the intelligence to fully grasp sarcasm and what rebellious Punk spirit is all about, it’s gonna be your average fucking Red Hat. So basically, what I’m saying is, we don’t really get the option of hoping they’ll figure the intricacies of language out, because they’re just not capable – you gotta say everything you wanna say with your whole damn chest, loud and proud, unafraid, and as unambiguously as Roxy Mayhem does in the chorus of this single. That’s where her sentiment becomes completely unmistakable & also the most powerful.
You can’t really be much more direct than yelling out “Fuck Donald Trump,” and I appreciate that she has. There’s not a single doubt that half their own country, and pretty much the whole world outside of the USA, absolutely feels where Roxy Mayhem is coming from and would rally to support the main message at the core of this song. Musically, “Fuck Donald Trump” is kind of a case of it is what it is…it’s not overtly complex or compelling, but it’s not the focus – everything you’ll hear is ultimately a vehicle to get Roxy to the point where she can yell out “Fuck Donald Trump.” That being said, it’s still been put together well enough to be listened to on a professional level for sure, and the vocals are stellar. There’s kind of a like…old-school Veruca Salt-like bounce to the sound overall, and I can get behind that for sure. Combine that with the fearlessness of a Pussy Riot and the underground Punk attitude and sarcasm of something like The Disfigurines from back in the day…it sounds good with a bright vibe to it and its dusty indie-production…nothing too polished here, and ultimately that works in this song’s favor. All I’m advocating for is being a bit more direct in the verses so that the most idiotic among us don’t get too confused about what’s really being said here…other than that, I’m completely cool with the rest and I fully support the main sentiment on display here. One more time for the people in the back, in case they’re somehow still not getting it – “FUCK DONALD TRUMP!” I hated him the last time around, and given that neither he nor I have changed in the four years in between, I still fucking hate him now too.
All-in-all, I dig that Roxy is at least willing to put something like this out there, especially in knowing how many people are gonna come at her for making this song. It’s unavoidable, and it’s nearly certain that she’s gonna get some hate for creating this – but just remember Roxy, they’re just the loud minority and nothing more, especially on a global scale. Most of us from outside the USA are watching in horror and simply waiting for the fuckery to begin on January 20th, knowing that we’re about to be in-store for the longest motherfucking four years on Earth that we’ve ever had to endure. To be completely honest with ya, I needed an anthem like “Fuck Donald Trump,” because that asshole has got Canada so damn riled up that we’re all ready to throw potatoes at the border or whatever it is we think we can do to resist this dipshit and make it crystal clear that he’s not wanted here, or anywhere else for that matter. Same with that Musk asshat, and fellow dickheads like Jordan Peterson, Kevin O’Leary, and Alberta’s Danielle Smith – they can all go have one big giant orgy of hate-stank in the fires of hell as far as I’m concerned, and I sincerely hope that they do. Before any of them came along – especially the orange menace – I enjoyed a peacefulness inside of me that has since been replaced by an incessant rage that never ceases…call it TDS if you want to, again, I don’t fucking care, I just want it to GO AWAY, and the only way that happens is when we bury that turd in the ground once and for all. When we do – and we eventually will – I’ll be one of the first to happily line up and piss on his grave…and I know I’ll be singing Roxy’s song when I do.
