Marc Biala – “Been Everywhere But Me”
Marc Biala – “Been Everywhere But Me” – Single Review
Alrighty y’all…we’ll gently ease us into the New Year with a ballad.
I’ll say this much – it’s nice to be able to hear Marc’s music outside of the Christmas realm. Not that I didn’t enjoy it before – I did, and the proof is here in the review of his album Snowfall Serenade: A Christmas Celebration if you feel like reading about how he went about beating the odds of my natural opposition to seasonal tunes – all I’m saying is that I appreciate getting a wider snapshot of what any artist or band would create outside of the holiday stuff. Anyhow. This new single “Been Everywhere But Me” provided me with the opportunity to learn more about the man & hear what he’s really all about.
Happy to report that things are good here. Marc’s not only a stand-up guy when it comes right down to it, but the dude’s a quality singer as well without a doubt. Obviously for myself, someone that was born Grunge, a ballad is…well…it’s just about the polar opposite of a lot of what I listen to, but as any of you regular readers would attest to, I get exposure to everything in some way, shape, or form. What I can tell you with certainty, is that “Been Everywhere But Me” really reveals the strength of his songwriting and proves he can deliver a performance that contains the kind of heart & sincerity required to bring the meaning to his message. As I understand it, “Been Everywhere But Me” is largely built on a reflection of many of the struggles that are faced within the LGTBQ community, and finding the courage it takes to be the truest version of yourself & overcoming all the adversity & obstacles that threaten to hold you back.
Marc knows this subject inside & out, and it shows in the performance he gives, which is fueled purely by the strength of his conviction. As I’ve said so many times on these pages of ours, the more YOU there is in YOUR music, the more WE will be into it as well – and there might not be too many finer examples of how that’s true than what you’ll hear on “Been Everywhere But Me.” Retro…Soft Rock…Pop…all of these genres are extremely tough to communicate sincerely in the modern day era we’re in right now, but this is also the same place that you’ll find Marc is excelling – and the reason is simple really – what he’s singing about matters to him. In the act of sharing this song with the rest of us, what he’s singing about will also matter to SO MANY other people all around the world…and through the strength & resilience of his spirit, he’ll serve as an inspiration to all kinds of people he’s never even met that will reach for this song when they need it more than words could ever say. I love that he’s written such a strong song that deals with such intimate and meaningful subject matter…because it’s really not just another single he’s got here – “Been Everywhere But Me” is a reflection of what LIFE ITSELF is like for a ton of people all over the map, and intensely relatable for those within the community I’m sure. Even for those outside of the LGTBQ community…people that have struggled to find their voice or have endured their own personal battles to find the place where they fit in this world…songs like “Been Everywhere But Me” will serve as a light in the dark that can help guide them forward. I look at it from an even larger perspective, where the act of writing, creating, and putting this single out shows that Marc is not only embracing his true self, but leading by example in a very important way that reminds us all how important that is to do, and encourages others to do the same. Honestly, this is a beautiful moment in time, and I feel like we’re lucky to witness this with him.
As far as the technical details and all that stuff is concerned…I’ll be real with ya – there’s not a whole lot of that that really matters in a situation like this. What matters here is the story behind the song, and the fact that the song exists, loud and proud, for all to listen to. Sure I could tell ya that you’re not going to hear any flaws in the music or vocals of “Been Everywhere But Me” because that’s the truth and all, but it’s really not the point of making a song like this. In fact, one could even argue that even IF there were some kind of perceived ‘flaws’ in “Been Everywhere But Me” that it would still be absolutely worth putting out there, because it’s greater messages of love and acceptance are paramount to anything else, you feel me? It’s all about finding your way to a place where you can be comfortable with who you are – and none of us should need to be perfect in order to feel that way…which is good, because none of us are. Biala does an exceptional job of detailing what life was like before, feeling like he wasn’t enough, and through the very act of being able to write this song & put it out there for all of you to hear, he shows us that he’s come out stronger on the other side of everything he’s ever been through. This song is an admirable moment in his journey without question… he should be incredibly proud of who he has become, and how he’s become an inspiration to others. Like I was tellin’ ya…someone out there is going to hear “Been Everywhere But Me” when they really need to, and it’ll be life-changing for them. I can’t imagine a more altruistic reason to make music than something like the potential to help others through what an artist creates. Marc has made a very important song that truly confirms the real magic of our humanity has always been inside of all of us, waiting for an opportunity to come out, just like it was once inside of him as well. Once YOU find your voice and everyone can hear it, WE recognize how special that magic is, and share in the beauty of what it’s like to live life the way that you always dreamed you could.
