Good Spells – “Down” Feat. Tim Moyo – Single Review

What was it…I think pretty close to around this time last summer that we first got introduced to the beat-makin’ ways of Good Spells on a collaborative cut called “All The Flames” that featured Tech N9ne wasn’t it?  Looks like the UK’s own digital minstrel has been back in the lab doin’ what he does best, and he’s back in action this year with a beat that features the talents of singer Tim Moyo on the mic this time around.  I always love checkin’ in on the innovators of our music-scene…let’s see what I can tell ya about the latest cut called “Down” from Good Spells & what it is I think about this shiny new single right here.

I’ll tell ya this much for sure, anyone out there that had the opportunity to listen to “All The Flames” from last year would expect a quality cut from Good Spells for sure.  I try not to pin artists/bands down too much on the expectations front…the ebb & flow of anyone’s career will reveal peaks and valleys of course.  That being said, I’ve been on a pretty damn decent roll since coming back from our move across Canada this summer, and it’s fairly safe to say that I know an artist like Good Spells stands a great chance of keeping the hot streak going with his crafted skillset.  Pushing play to find that “Down” was another stellar cut in his catalog was no real surprise to me if I’m being truthful with ya – but that doesn’t stop me from being excited about what I’m hearing, or wanting to pass the hype on to YOU.

The professionalism in the music of Good Spells has always stood out to me, and that remains the case here on “Down” as well – this dude doesn’t overlook any details in what he creates, and even in a more low-key cut like this one, the dynamics you wanna find that make music interesting & engaging to listen to, are completely where they should be.  “Down” has got exceptional depth to it…it’s every bit as widespread & atmospheric as it is memorable & accessible – which, to be honest, ain’t the easiest combination of attributes to achieve in music, yet here we are and Good Spells has pulled it off, 100%.  From deep bass-driven digital swells, to the crisp snap of the beat, the tightness of the production overall, and the cleverness of the layers & background beaming out sound proudly from the lefts to the rights – “Down” has the vibe y’all…and once again, it’s the relentless professionalism of Good Spells that leads the way to victory here.  This dude’s instincts for beat-makin’ are essentially second to none y’all.

Tim Moyo on the mic, more than holds his own – this cat is perfectly suited to rock the mic on a cut like this one.  With range that takes you right up close throughout the verses he’ll sing, to how distant and far away he becomes in the hooks of the chorus as we continue “Down” this emotional spiral – the focus & tone you wanna hear is all right where it should be.  This whole single works extremely well – and for what’s essentially on the slower-side of songs, perhaps the most surprising thing about “Down” is how genuinely addictive it becomes, and how quickly that magic gets worked on ya in comparison to how slow & stoically the music is moving.  Credit to them both for sure – Good Spells set the table, and Tim Moyo sat right down to start eatin’ – the resulting combination of talent you’ll find leaves no one hungry for anything more, you feel me?  These two artists complement each other without question for sure.

You factor in the absolutely stellar lyric-video made to support this track, and all indications point towards a high quality experience from sight to sound for all of you to enjoy this summer.  For real – I keep on listening & watching this video for “Down” because I genuinely love it – these colorful visuals and the animated dude continuously falling “Down” the rabbit-hole was the perfect accompaniment to the vibe they’ve created on this single & the words it contains.  Definitely another winner here in the Good Spells catalog, and a great introduction to Tim Moyo for those unfamiliar with the name by now – it’s great to have the scene supporting each other like it has been this year, this has definitely been a summer filled with on-point collaborations & “Down” definitely qualifies as another significant highlight.
