Fred Vanterra – “Gold”
Fred Vanterra – “Gold” – Single Review
While it might have been a while since the last time we reviewed Fred Vanterra’s music here on our pages, you can rest assured the man has still kept plenty busy. Apparently, from what I gather, he and his company of Vanterra Arts have been keeping busy diving into “the captivating realm of video game music” with the goal of creating “immersive soundtracks that transport players into extraordinary gaming experiences.” No lies detected, as they say…and I think this new single “Gold” confirms all that.
So look…my responsibility is to always be as objective and honest as I can be with ya, so I’ll be upfront and admit to the fact that my personal gaming experiences are so bizarrely limited that it’s almost comical. Like, I’m a dude approaching my mid-forties, and the only real video games I’ve ever played – and STILL play – are all completely based on the world’s favorite plumber, Mario. How lame is that, right? Believe me when I tell ya, it’s not like I’m unaware of how innovative games have become – I am, fully – but the time crunch of life has put me in the position of prioritizing my time off in different ways that seem to never even get around to turning on a console. What I do know, is that I’m the exception and not the rule in this regard – the world of gaming is so advanced and popular right now that I’m sure if I were to look up the official statistics they’d say that interest is at an all-time high, in all of its forms.
What I can tell ya, is that I’ve certainly seen recent trailers for many games, and they’re incredible – largely due to their amazing soundtracks as well in fact. They look like full-on big budget movies now, and have storylines that are filled with seemingly endless possibilities. What I loved about listening to Fred’s new single “Gold,” which is the official soundtrack to a “text adventure” game called Gold Miner, was just how HUGE it sounds. It’s the kind of composition that sounds like the combination of mystery, adventure, and endless possibilities that games today so brilliantly bring together as one for you to enjoy. What’s not surprising to me in the least is the quality you’ll discover – Fred’s known to put his best into everything he does, so it was honestly somewhat expected to hear this come out so well for him. Could I see this being the soundtrack to a quest, or search for gold up in them thar hills & such? Heck yeah! Put me down for an adventure, let me grab my pan and see if I can find myself a nugget or two – “Gold” not only sounds extremely well put together, but seriously enticing. Like, for example, listen to the spot where he’s adding in the flute during the fourth minute…it’s absolutely awesome! You get this mix of like, genuine curiosity in the main melody on the surface through the flute sounds, and a bold mix of drama underneath supplied by the piano. I mean, I’m pretty positive that Fred does all of this digitally through synths and such, but you get the idea…the sounds are more than convincing, the ideas & imagination are alive & thriving throughout this song, and the quality we’ve come to expect from the guy is as sparkling as ever in the production. So like I was saying, in some ways, it’s no surprise to hear such professionalism from start to finish in an artist like Fred, but that’s the kind of reliability we’re all searching for in what we create…his dedication to quality is something we should all strive for.
Is it every day listening? I dunno…are you a gamer? How do you feel about having your airpods in whilst you’re panning for gold? Do you dig instrumental compositions that feel like a quest or a journey? If you’re answering yes to any of these things, then chances are, you’ll be just fine and keep a track like “Gold” nice & handy on your playlist. As for the rest of you out there…or even those of you like myself that are increasingly rare in a digital world and still playing your original NES or Super NES – I still think you’re going to find tremendous value in listening to an exploratory tune like “Gold,” so give it a spin or two! Tracks like this take you through an entire adventure on their own…you’ll travel from moments of spellbinding intensity, to the calm & serenity of wonder, majesty & mystery, and all the way back again. The best thing is, you won’t even need to leave the safety of your humble abode to do it!
