Flowers For Juno – “Physical Culture”
Flowers For Juno – “Physical Culture” – Single Review
I’m into it.
From what I’ve read, Flowers For Juno is a fairly new band on the scene, based out of England and brought to you by a duo of musical minds, Jack Wilson (instruments) and Benjó James (Vocals). They’re considering their sound to be Gothic Rock/Metal – and I’m not gonna dispute that from the one sample of their music that I’ve got so far…if that’s what they’re aiming to be, then so shall it be I’m sure. I’ll put it to ya this way…whether you consider their debut single “Physical Culture” to be a combination of Gothic Rock/Metal, or you feel like it’s Alternative, or just straight up Hard Rock – rest assured if you dig on any of those genres, chances are you’re in great shape to enjoy what Flowers For Juno is creating.
You longstanding readers already know how I feel about labels and genres anyhow – they’re guidelines at the very best, and irrelevant at their worst. Like packaging for your products, it’s what’s on the inside that really matters anyhow ain’t it? Flowers For Juno are in excellent shape when it comes to that. On their very first single, they prove they’ve got the juice, the energy, the skills, and the sound that’ll pull you in to listen. Above all things perhaps, it’s tracks like “Physical Culture” that would give you every reason to return & see what they put out next too – that’s the kind of gateway song we’re talkin’ about. Have a listen for yourself below!
There are many hurdles that exist throughout the course of any career, but the best way to combat any that come your way are finding reasons to be encouraged that progress is being made. If I was in Flowers For Juno, I’d be fucking stoked about the results they’ve achieved on “Physical Culture” and definitely be encouraged by them. You make a track like this one, and it should have you wanting to make another…and hopefully, if they’re applying themselves right and they’re focused, that’ll be one of a series of iterations of the same thing. New song, excitement, release, new song, excitement, release.
They’ve clearly got the right pieces they need to do what they wanna do with their music, now it’s just about buckling down and getting the work done – but there’s no doubt whatsoever that this single is a killer start. Anything Rock, whether it’s Gothic or otherwise, has a brutally challenging road ahead from its inception, given that there is precious little that can be done to recreate the wheel in that particular style of music. So heck yeah, don’t get it twisted – I like what I hear in “Physical Culture,” but in that same breath I can acknowledge the superhuman amount of work that will still need to be done in order for Flowers For Juno to establish their identity so that it’s unmistakable for anything else out there in this vast music-scene we share. Plenty of room for them to grow and evolve, which I’ve always said is a really damn good thing to have as a new band breaking out – otherwise there’d be no other way to go but down and who the hell would want that? I can hear that Flowers For Juno still has opportunities in their production – they’ve got more air in “Physical Culture” than a bag of chips does right now, but they will sort that kind of stuff out with time and experience I’m sure. I actually ain’t even hating on it when it comes to “Physical Culture” – it kind of gives this song its underground vibe & a raw edge that works.
The bottom line is, they’ve got IDEAS…and they clearly know their way around a memorable hook as well. I think they’ve got exceptional stuff happening in their vocal melody of the chorus, I dig the grittiness of the way they designed their verses, the music is practically bulletproof with its hybrid mix between the analog & digital realm, and their songwriting is spot-on here if you ask me. I’ve got no qualms about throwing my support behind Flowers For Juno based on what I’ve heard in this debut single – “Physical Culture” is a badass tune, and I think every step that Wilson & James take with this band could potentially be a massive leap forward until we find them right at the forefront of Rock, driving the genre & its million offshoots to raise the stakes in order to compete with these two guys.
