Ferra – “Déjà Vu”
Ferra – “Déjà Vu” – Single Review
Ha! What was I tellin’ ya last time around?
Keep your ears on Ferra…that’s what I said. In fact, in reviewing her last single “Phase Me” earlier this year on our pages back in May, I was already well-convinced of her world-class potential – you can read all about it for yourself by clicking right here. To sum it all up quickly for ya, I was pretty much shocked to discover “Phase Me” was this singer/songwriter’s debut cut…that’s how wall-to-wall solid her first single was. And I told ya, right there in-print, she was gonna have a seriously breakout year as an artist; 2019 is Ferra’s year for the taking as far as my ears are concerned…I stand behind all of what I’ve said.
She proves to be irresistible once again with her latest cut, a smoothly designed tale of heartbreak, life & love, as she dives into the sleek & stylistic, R&B-infused sounds of “Déjà Vu.” For as minimalist as this single is, how slowly it actually moves, and how much space there is for Ferra to make an impression on ya with the fantastically expressive emotion she pours into the microphone – you’ll find that “Déjà Vu” flies by much quicker than you’ll ever assume at first, instantly warranting another (several) spins. This cut is one of the finest examples of the purity of music’s ingredients…each element in the atmosphere & beat that is placed into the mix serves a strong purpose, and the majority of this entire song is left squarely on the shoulders of Ferra to rise to the occasion, spread her wings, and soar through it. Not only does she deliver on “Déjà Vu” – she charges into the spotlight head-on, not shying away from the performance the words she’s written deserved whatsoever. That may sound like a given, and of course with the caliber of artist that Ferra has already proven to be kind of is in a way already – but make no mistake about just how impressive & sharp her focus truly is. Tons of incredible singers have faltered in the pursuit of a slow-jam by missing the mark in finding the right spark & energy to pair with the music surrounding them…but that’s certainly not the case here; every move that Ferra makes is a perfect match for the vibe, concept, and flow of “Déjà Vu.” She sings this song flawlessly, beautifully, and with that star-quality of a born entertainer – I’m endlessly impressed by just how professional Ferra is already and guarantee it’s something that each & every one of you out there will hear in the music she’s making. Like, if you weren’t already in love with the way she rolls through the storyline of her words in the verse, just wait until you hear the exceptionally graceful & gorgeous way she takes on the chorus of this single – 100% stunning. With words that draw from her own experience, Ferra takes you into a twisted tale of love that many listeners out there will certainly relate to…those moments in time that we remember & reflect on the past & have to realize & reconcile with the fact that the people we love rent space in our hearts & minds for years & years, long after it’s gone…if that’s even ever the case. Perhaps these nostalgic reminders prove that a love that once existed is one that never dies…Ferra brilliantly muses on how heartbreaking it can be to examine & remember the past…not because of the bad parts or what caused it to end, so much as plunging deep into the memories of what made it special. There are moments in life where many of us wish we could go back to, relive, or repeat somehow; it’s those exact type of thoughts that Ferra relives throughout “Déjà Vu” – and of course because none of us can go back to these times anywhere other than in our heads & hearts, we can become trapped in a beautiful hell like this, remembering & longing for a past that’s unattainable in the present. What gives “Déjà Vu” an even sharper edge to its meaning, is just how exceptionally beautiful everything sounds – reminding us that, as heartbreaking as it can be to revisit the past, it’s a pain that we somehow can’t help but welcome back at times, no matter what we do.
I said it before and I’ll say it again – Ferra’s got a true date with stardom & success in her future if she keeps the quality flowing like she has on these first two singles I’ve heard from her. Between her debut cut “Phase Me” and this outstanding follow-up “Déjà Vu” – I’m more than convinced she’s the real deal, even this early on in her career. She sings with confidence, grace, soul, and true emotion you can feel – & she writes lyrics that really connect…Ferra’s already leading the way for the rest of her genre to follow, straight up.
