Fabio Cicala – “The Words I Didn’t Say”

Fabio Cicala – “The Words I Didn’t Say” – Single Review
For sure…I’m interested in this.
There’s something very unique about the way that Fabio has composed this new single of his, “The Words I Didn’t Say,” and the only thing I might like better than how he’s written it, is the way he plays it.
The tangible emotion that this man gets outta his guitar is genuinely something else to experience. When it comes to instrumental tunes, I generally assume that we can find some direction in regards to what a song might be about from the title, which has been proven in a countless many of’em throughout the history of music. It isn’t ALWAYS the case, but quite often, it can be a good clue to work with that’ll help you understand what a song is all about. In a situation like this, where you’ve got a song called “The Words I Didn’t Say,” and it’s an instrumental tune…I mean…c’mon y’all – that in itself, is interesting, ain’t it? I wasn’t expecting the title to play such a significant role in how much I enjoyed listening to this tune, but it quickly proved to be part of why I love what I hear in this Cicala single.
Because think about it – we’re talking about “The Words I Didn’t Say,” right? So…first of all, it’s a bold move to go with an instrumental tune to say those words he didn’t say, but that’s one of the coolest things about it right off the bat – it’s a statement in itself, like Fabio declaring that he can indeed say everything he needs to express without actually using any words at all. While that is an interesting way to approach saying something left unsaid without a doubt, it seemed to be just scratching the surface of this mystery. Knowing that “The Words I Didn’t Say” was an instrumental, you’d then likely assume that whatever it was that he wanted to say, he’d find a way to express through his guitar work, right? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that he doesn’t – but what I am saying, is that the melodic structure and sound of “The Words I Didn’t Say” ended up creating more questions about all that than it seemed to provide us answers with. The intricate musicianship and the spellbindingly curious sound of this song felt like it was saying something for sure, but I’d be amazed if any of us could determine what that was. Instead, we’re treated to a maze of mesmerizing sound and a complex emotional tapestry that weaves in and out of delicate & heartfelt moments, spirals of despairing vibes, and a classic, undeniable beauty.
If he’s really communicating “The Words I Didn’t Say,” you’d have to assume that it was mainly a mix of confounded confusion, strong unresolved feelings, and yet, profound admiration as well. Of course, that’s just my personal interpretation, but the point is almost that there could be so many others – that “The Words I Didn’t Say” ends up presenting us with a blank canvas, to interpret the sound into all the different scenarios we can think of where things might have been left unsaid, or thoughts unfinished. So you really end up climbing right down the rabbit hole with Fabio on this single, largely projecting onto this song all the things that YOU haven’t said at times you should have spoken up, and remembering the feeling of what that was like with every start, stop, twist, pivot, and shift in the direction of his intriguing melody. It’s incredibly awesome to experience listening to this song and trying to figure out what those words Fabio didn’t say could’ve been, while simultaneously examining all of your own at the same time.
Beyond all that, the man’s technique is completely stellar – it’s a genuine joy just to listen to him play with such precision and get the maximum potential out of each & every note you’ll hear. While it’s certainly true that it’s always going to be an uphill battle to get a song like “The Words I Didn’t Say” out there into the mainstream, I’d highly encourage one & all to have a listen to this single. What I think ended up impressing me the most, was that even though it’s virtually impossible to fully untangle the mystery this virtuoso has created here for a certain fact, there’s this like…level beyond all that stuff, where you just sit there, fascinated by the mesmerizing way this guy plays guitar, and somehow, that ends up calming you right down in the most extraordinarily, soul-soothing ways. All of a sudden you don’t feel like you NEED to know what might have been left unsaid, because you can feel it all inside of you as you listen…like Fabio has instilled the answers you were looking for in the way he plays this song.
This single is audible art by every conceivable definition, and a triumph for classical guitar instrumentals. From its enchanting mystery, to its humble presentation, to the comforting vibes it creates spin after spin, “The Words I Didn’t Say” was wonderful to listen to from start to finish, and deserves to be on repeat in my opinion. For real…I could have listened to this track all day long, and in many cases over the course of this week since its release, I did the best I could to try and do exactly that. You get locked right into this song and the story that Fabio weaves through the sound he creates…he’s an exceptional talent from every angle, 100%. The more I listened to “The Words I Didn’t Say,” the more I truly loved it.
