Asher Laub, Ginny Luke, Johannes Gritschacher – “Misirlou” – Single Review

Well there’s every reason to be stoked about this instrumental single right here!

That being said, I practically needed a dictionary and a thesaurus to get through the press release that came along with “Misirlou” – and quite frankly, I’m not all that sure what I could possibly say that isn’t already somewhat included in the assessment of this song that came along with it.  Like, we get it, we get it – it’s a GREAT song!  I already know that what I’m hearing is far above my own musical capacity and knowledge level on the technical front…having a PR written this good was like rubbing it in further!

Anyhow.  I’ve long said that the violin is one of my all-time favorite instruments, so consider this trio of talents has two of’em in the mix here on “Misirlou,” I knew I was in good shape to like or love this single before I’d even pushed play.  Drawing on years of incredible experience and expertise, you’ve got the remarkable Asher Laub on the electric violin, the amazing Ginny Luke on the classical violin, and then Johannes Gritschacher to lay down them BEATS you’re hearing in “Misirlou.”  Needless to say based upon all that you’ll hear, they each bring an impressive resume and skillset to the table to create this ensemble of awesomeness.  Asher’s a composer, producer, and recognized musical multi-talent.  Ginny has played with titans of the scene like Britney Spears, Black Eyed Peas, and Dave Matthews Band to name a few – and Johannes has also played with legends like Christina Aguilera & Justin Timberlake.  They’ve all got reputations for excellence that proceed them, and they prove their value as performers in every note they play.  I could tell you this kind of stuff all day long, but trust me when I say, you’ll hear it easily for yourself – I was completely blown away by the level of skill and professionalism combined.  Interestingly enough, you can hear Ginny’s influence on the Black Eyed Peas in this tune, can you not?  Is it just me or do we have a line or two in the melody of “Misirlou” that certainly resembles what you’d find on their mega-hit “Pump It” – yes?  That was honestly the first thing I thought of when I spun this song for the first time, though of course it’s also different in another million spectacular ways as well.  As it turns out, the origin of “Misirlou” as an original song dates much further back, and it’s indeed part of the samples included on “Pump It” by BEP…small world though, ain’t it?  Interesting to hear how everything connects.

In any event, I’d pay freakin’ good money to see these three perform live if I ever got the opportunity – they are undoubtedly some of the most tremendous players I’ve heard.  What I really love about “Misirlou” and why I bring that up in the first place, is because this recording is like hearing the real essence of seasoned veterans of the stage, know what I mean?  The insane level of talent and dynamic flair is found in complete abundance, and there’s no question that all three of them know exactly how to get the most out of their respective instruments in their quest to entertain you.  To be fair, the level of expression they apply does so much more than entertain – “Misirlou” is outright THRILLING y’all.  This is the kind of instrumental single that will EXCITE listeners, no matter what kind of genre they normally listen to.  “Misirlou” is the kind of cut that will create NEW fans of instrumental music – it’s THAT good!

Don’t just take my word for it – LISTEN.

These three are absolutely and utterly FLAWLESS as they play together.  What’s more important, is that they play with significant levels of passion and purpose combined…everything you hear in everything they play, it’s like Asher, Ginny, and Johannes continually remain a step ahead of you.  That points towards their undeniable professionalism, their consistent readiness, and their impeccable skillsets.  No one is phoning it in here dear readers, dear friends – “Misirlou” is a testament to being prepared and to three lifetimes that have clearly been dedicated to the art & craft of making music.  It’s a spellbinding single, straight-up…and I think the masses out there are going to be in awe of what they’ve created here.  From its noticeable cross-cultural vibes, to the exceptional musicianship on display at every twist & turn of the melody or punch of the beat, these three prove to be an all-out force to be reckoned with.

The only issue I can find is that they have NO IDEA how greedy my ears are, and now that I’ve heard how sensational these three play together, you better believe I want a whole lot MORE from them in the future, and I’m equally confident that you’ll feel the same.  There’s simply nothing about this single that you wouldn’t like or love…the attention to detail, the innovative creativity, the ART in their sound…it all stacks up to a supremely award-worthy effort in my humble opinion.  There’s drama, there’s tension, there’s beauty, there’s mystery…I mean…c’mon y’all…you couldn’t ask for more than what you’ll get from these three symphonic talents combined on “Misirlou” – this is 100% fantastic from start to finish.
