Timeseven – “Just A Little While”

Timeseven – “Just A Little While” – Single Review

When Timeseven gets it right, this band really gets it right.

So look…a couple things can be true at the same time, as they are in many cases.  In this particular one however, I’d say that we’re looking at:

  1.  A song that is superbly well-written and perfectly performed
  2.  Yes, I’m in an overly-emotional state with my pup at the vet getting life-saving cancer surgery today

Obviously, William Hayden of Timeseven didn’t write this song about my dog or presumably any other…but…hear me out – the words COULD still apply, couldn’t they?  Right now, I suppose it’s fair to say I need them to.  That’s the thing about music though, ain’t it?  We all internalize tunes and make them about what they mean to us.  Artists and bands write’em, and we claim the meaning as our own, applying the words to whatever it is that we’re going through at the time.  When I heard Brad Williams hit that sweet spot in the chorus for the first time, where he sings “stay with me just a little while,” I burst into tears after holding back what I’ve been going through for what feels like forever.  It was the release that I truly needed – so thank you Timeseven.  I’m down a box of Kleenex now, but I think I’m on the other side of it all now, finally.

The official story, according to Timeseven’s main songwriter Hayden, is that “Just A Little While” is “about shutting out the world… slowing down… and holding on to a moment you never want to end.”  And okay, so maybe the tears aren’t quite finished yet.  Lemme tell ya folks – if you’re going through something intense, “Just A Little While” might very well reduce the rest of you to blubbering rubble – take it from a guy that’s now got firsthand experience with this.  There are so many lines you could cite from this remarkable new single…”no need for words when silence speaks…” “the clock is cruel but we’ll defy what’s held forever in the blink of an eye…” “when the new day wakes, the dawn can wait, stay with me it’s not too late.”  If only y’all could see me right now.  My eyeballs need a set of windshield wipers.

Evocative song, to say the least.  I think we all can relate to the idea of “holding on to a moment you never want to end,” and we all understand what the aftermath of those same moments can be like in certain circumstances.  In the best of times, they’re tributary, and you end up with a beautiful memory you can keep forever.  In the worst, they become finite at the very same time…as in, you’ll probably still have that beautiful memory, but it might mark the end of a whole chapter in your life, or in the life of someone you love.  This is far from the first time I’ve been in awe of what Timeseven creates.  I can still recall the very first single I heard called “When You’re Home” and how powerfully moving it was.  This is where being objective gets tough…in an emotional state, where you find a song like “Just A Little While” that is essentially keeping your spirit afloat when you need it the most, it’s tough to properly examine.  Do I think “Just A Little While” is the best song I’ve heard from Timeseven so far?  Right now I do, yes!

Alright…the truth is, I never lose sight of my objectivity…not even in the worst state you’ll ever find me in – so believe me when I tell you that, yes, “Just A Little While” is in fact, the best song I’ve heard from this band full of musical all-stars to-date.  That’s really saying something when it comes right down to it, because truthfully, I don’t think this band ever tends to make any huge mistakes.  Sure I’ve got my favorites, and sure some songs will always resonate with me more than others – but on a professional level when it comes to the writing, execution, and quality of the tunes you’ll hear from this band, the material is always exceptional in all the right ways.  From William’s guitar, to Alison’s bass, to Daniel’s drums, to Noah’s strings…Brad’s outstanding voice…everything hits a massive homerun here.  Even the mix from Buck Snow deserves a shout-out – let’s be real here…his credits include working with The Fray, and if you’re familiar with that band, you know he knew exactly what buttons to push when working on a song like this.  You get the point – everything about “Just A Little While” is genuinely award-worthy.

That’s who Timeseven is y’all…like I told you from the start, when this band gets it right, they really get it right…and I meant it.  It’s almost hard to fathom how they could have exceeded any expectations we could have had given how incredible their past singles have been.  The cycle is now officially renewed – in my opinion, it practically shouldn’t even be possible to write a better song than “Just A Little While” in one lifetime…but hey, if Timeseven has already pulled off topping their own excellence before, then we have to believe it’s entirely possible that they could do it again.  Personally speaking, I think it’s gonna take longer than “Just A Little While” for that next single to come along and make an impact on me like this one did…but again, if any band is capable of doing it, Timeseven is the one.  For now, I’d just like to pass on my sincere gratitude to the entire band for creating a moment in music like this that I didn’t want to let go of…this is a song I needed to hear at precisely this time, when I needed it most.  I won’t be alone in feeling that way…there will be many folks listening to “Just A Little While” that will discover this song was exactly what they needed to hear when it found them.  We don’t always choose the music we end up listening to so much as sometimes it chooses us…and it’s our job to pay attention and listen close when it does.  The best songs ever written have always had the ability to help guide us, educate us, and provide healing when we need it – and Timeseven might very well have one of those tunes right here.
