SV & Alyssa Jane – Neo Blastic
SV & Alyssa Jane – Neo Blastic – Album Review
No joke folks…it has either been a dicey year for the independent music scene, or at least for us here at sleepingbagstudios in 2026…maybe both. So when I see a couple names like SV & Alyssa Jane pop onto my playlist again, believe me when I tell ya, I’m breathing a genuine sigh of relief. Some tunes I might actually enjoy? Does my volume knob still turn UP in the right direction? I’m truly excited to find out! There have been a few records of note this year, but trust me when I say the struggle has been noticeably real for the independents this year.
This collaboration has been endlessly reliable from day one as far as my ears are concerned, and when “So Fly” started up Neo Blastic, I was thankful to realize they’ve haven’t changed one iota in that regard. That ultra-smooth and seamless professional production from the music of SV…that gorgeously stunning voice of Alyssa Jane…it’s a pairing that has always hit different in the right ways, and I’m proud to report that it still does. They went SHORT with these tunes, but for once I’ll admit, in this particular case it’s a real good recipe to get you pushing repeat or looping your favorites for a couple spins or more at a time. Yes I’m talkin’ from experience! I spun the record several times over this past week, but when I went to officially start writing this review, I fully got stuck on “So Fly” and feel like I must have spent a good five or ten rotations through it before I was willing to move on to the rest. It’s a seriously inviting opener that not only flexes their signature stylistic vibes, and also a track that confirms they haven’t lost a step. Hooks are remarkable from the music to the microphone…I love the steadiness SV shows us through the music, and listening to Alyssa switch gears for two entirely different sounds with her vocals was stellar.
The balance of strengths across the board might be the most impressive aspect of listening to these two in action. There’s rarely, if ever, a time where I can point to one of these all-stars as the main reason to listening to a song without feeling like the other would deserve just as much credit. Like, when Alyssa starts singing the song called “On My Mind,” I’m pretty much convinced she couldn’t possibly put in a better performance than what you’ll hear. Then as soon as I’m thinking about that, I can’t help but to recognize that great vocals genuinely require a great atmosphere and music to get them there, you feel me? So then I start listening to the precision and purpose that SV creates his beats and music with, and yeah…we’re back at square one, recognizing that these two inspire each other to be at their very best. They’ve got an artistically reciprocal relationship when it comes to the craft, and what else could your ears ever want to hear other than something like that? Neo Blastic was designed to have you feelin’ it, and “On My Mind” coming after “So Fly” quickly proves that they both understood the mission. Jane’s vocal hooks on “On My Mind” are freakishly brilliant, and SV’s music is ridiculously enticing to listen to.
Those bass lines right there! Hell yeah to that SV…I’m loving the jazzy combinations he’s working with on “Nerves,” and I’m quite positive I won’t be alone in feeling that way. Alyssa is as sensational as ever, gliding over the beat with her stylistic sound. Once again, it’s practically impossible to separate one of these two from the other in terms of what makes “Nerves” worth your time to listen to…you need’em both at all times! Thankfully, that’s exactly what you signed up for in listening to Neo Blastic. That being said…when them horns hit y’all…you might very well feel like the music has the slight edge here – I’d understand it if you ended up leaning that way. I might understand it even more if you cited how amazing the distant sound of the snare is in the mix here…like, it’s so far removed that I’m practically guessing that it even IS a snare…whatever it is, SV has got that nestled in there tight as tight can be, and I’m loving it. Jane is throwing verbal haymakers though, not to be outdone…like, listen to moments she drops into this track like right after the first minute, and again about 1:20 in…she’s a complete knockout!
Ultimately, I suppose you gotta go with Trip Hop as being the genre they’d most likely belong to if you were to try to categorize’em or put’em into some kind of section in a record store…but there is so much more to their combined sound in how Alyssa can take you into smoldering R&B or sparkling Pop with such ease, and then SV has got just about everything in his bag from EDM to Jazz…so the range they’ve got combined is actually quite remarkable overall. I’m content with Trip Hop as being the right place where they’d likely fit most though…I’m sure they would be too…audibly it makes the most sense and gives them the most flexibility to pretty much do whatever they want to do inside of a limitless sound that is known to incorporate a ton of different styles of music into the mix. As you listen to “Daughter,” you’ve gotta admire what these two can do and how innovative they can truly be. They’re not out here to chase the algorithms y’all – they ARE what the algorithm has to respond to and adjust for. They don’t merely follow the trends dear readers, dear friends – they set’em for the rest to keep up to. And when you listen to a track like “Daughter,” “let’s be honest” – most can’t. Tracks like this are full confirmation that SV and Alyssa Jane are capable of creating extraordinary music together that others couldn’t even conceive of. A track like “Daughter” sounds righteously fresh & possesses the uniqueness we all crave.
The only thing you’ll catch me conceding to you, is that when you ARE breaking ground with sounds like you’ll find in something like “Daughter,” or indeed on “One Who Wins” perhaps even more right after, is that there’s always risk in supplying something new to people’s ears. Their relentless professionalism will secure the attention of listeners, but that’s the real key here…it’s because of that, that this duo will keep you coming back for another spin through Neo Blastic, and the more exposure you get to it, the more your ears start to naturally accept what they’re creating. I’m not suggesting you’ll be resistant to any of what you’ll hear on this record, but I am saying that repetition, exposure, and familiarity goes a long, long way when it comes to absorbing uniqueness, so give them time to work their magic on you if you ever feel like you’re unsure about something you hear at first. “One Who Wins” is a solid example of a track that’ll likely grow on you with time and experience…though even as I’m writing this too you now, I might still not be 100% convinced on the main sound of the beat if I’m being real with ya. The rest is so undeniably slick and cool that I’m willing to overlook it, but yeah…it sounds like SV took that right to the edge of the red line without quite spilling over, but it’d be like looking at a photo finish of an Olympic sprint to see how close it really was I reckon. There’s so precious little to pick on or cite as something you might change…these two know what they’re doing, and they both execute at the highest levels. Whenever I hear something from this talented pairing that might confuse me for a moment or two, believe me when I tell you, I tend to put that on ME way more than I’d put it on THEM. Whether it’s as listeners, or as their peers, chances are it takes a bit of effort on our end to keep up to these two.
Make no mistake either – Alyssa’s lyricism can often take an unintentional backseat to her stylistically slick vocals, which probably shouldn’t really be the case at all. I’ll admit, even I can get mesmerized by listening to the sound of her voice and totally lose sight of the words and what she’s even singing about in the process…but anytime I take a moment to focus on that element of what she brings to this collaboration, she’s holding her own with the same confidence and insightfulness that she sings with. “Discourse” is a solid track for really digging into the versatility and poetry she can bring to the words, and her general fearlessness to sing about whatever she wants to, exactly as she chooses to express it. I think it’s fair to say that the middle section of Neo Blastic runs a bit deeper in terms of perhaps prioritizing substantial content over shiny hooks…but you can’t tell me that’s not a trade worth making every once in a while when the results come out this strong. The subtle, low-end heavy mix that SV has put together on “Discourse” gives this track a serious artistic rumble that felt like a genuinely perfect fit.
Bringing more of the underground Hip-Hop edge to “Clocked,” SV and Alyssa continue to prove that they can be effective shapeshifters whenever they want to morph their sound to the next idea. Never static, never still, they keep it movin’ – and addictive cuts like “Clocked” will go a long way to prove that no matter what arena, category, or box you might find’em in, they’re thriving. This would be comparable to stuff you might expect to hear out of the more stylized cuts from Phantogram in the mainstream, or Paradame on an independent level…or like what I was always hoping that hidingtobefound would have gone on to become over time. No matter what you think it reminds you of, or who you might compare it to, I think we’ll all be able to universally agree that “Clocked” is one seriously cool-ass cut, yes? The beat is simple, crisp & effective, and the color that SV brings to the rest of the music surrounding it is as brilliantly controlled as it is wild for its sound selection and style. Jane is putting in an extraordinarily versatile performance that could very well be one of the most incredible highlights she’s put into the mic on the entire record, which is obviously saying quite a lot seven cuts deep into the set at this point.
Back to the classic, jazzy vibe they create so well together as “All Nighter” starts our way into the final three tracks on Neo Blastic, complete with saxophone in the mix for ya, let’s be real – these two clearly haven’t lost a step since the last time we had’em on our pages back in 2024 when they served up Neo Phily. I suppose the question is whether or not this record pushed them forward or not…and to be entirely truthful, I don’t know if I have the answer to that. When I think about the music of SV & Alyssa Jane, I associate it with excellence…so in many ways, Neo Blastic seems like it naturally continues the mission they’ve already been on through its sheer consistency. While content wise, it’s arguably still going to sound like a lateral move for most listeners out there I’m sure, I think there’s something to be said for the refinement in what they create…it really doesn’t feel like they’ve overlooked anything in this lineup of songs, and they’re sounding as professional as ever. I like that in listening to tracks like “All Nighter,” you realize they don’t feel that pressure to conform or become more like anything else that’s out there in the scene right now…and I genuinely love that about’em. They’re doing what they do, in the way that they’d do it, come hell or high water, and from my perspective, they’ve chosen wisely in that regard. Obviously that approach might make it more challenging in terms of where they will or won’t be able to find space for their music to exist on a commercial level to a degree, but savvy listeners and DJs out there will be stoked to add something like this to their playlists, and that could be more than enough to get a strong buzz going. Because c’mon now…how often do you hear a song like “All Nighter” that has such a faded feeling & stylistic swagger to it, yet clearly has a focus that’s also second to none?
Now…if you’re asking me what could very well be the right single to represent them, and/or what could very well be the most accessible cut on the record, there’s an extremely solid chance that I’d be going with “Our Game” as the correct answer to both those questions. SV is at his innovative best here – he’s cooked up some music that probably wouldn’t even look like it worked if you wrote it all out on paper, yet here in the results, you can hear how his instincts are always bang on. Once again, when you set the right atmosphere in place, you’ll find singers thriving on a whole different level…and as if Alyssa needed to keep on proving herself creatively (when she in fact, has already done that several times over), she adds in another multi-dimensional performance that highlights the versatility she possesses as an artist. All-in-all, “Our Game” ends up somehow not only being one of the most unique tracks in the whole set, but also easily one of its most accessible songs too…and it’s rare that you find both of those things at the same time in the same tune. Yet here we are, and that’s the case. The quality and care they’ve taken with the music they’ve made throughout Neo Blastic would be audible to anyone tuning in. You’ve really gotta hand it to these two…staying the course and doing things their own way has continually led them to remarkable results, and the charming display of charismatic sound on “Our Game” is full proof.
Did they save their very best song for last? Trust me, there is going to be a TON of listeners that feel that way, and I don’t know if I’d be able to argue against that assessment…”Feel Like This” is at the very least, one of the best songs I’ve heard this duo put into their catalog, full stop. For a song that’s only a mere 2:17 in total length, the impact that it makes goes so far beyond what you’d expect. The main vocal hook from Alyssa is sincerely special…it’s the magic of music, right there in the center of the spotlight – and SV has truly outdone himself with the delicate, gentle-yet-dynamic beat that he’s created for her to sing with. This is one of those songs where can feel the intention, you know what I mean? Like, I can only imagine what it would have been like for both Alyssa and SV to sit back and listen to the final mastered version of “Feel Like This” for the very first time…they must have been beaming from ear to ear, because moments like this don’t just come along every day, let alone how rare it is to find them in such a short amount of space. Circling back to that point I was making earlier about how it could be somewhat difficult to find placement for their music in certain spots, “Feel Like This” almost has the opposite problem to solve…as in, where wouldn’t this track fit in besides EVERYWHERE? Like, I think I’d be genuinely shocked if this last cut didn’t go on to be featured in the shows and movies we watch over these next several years ahead…from Dramas to Rom-Coms, “Feel Like This” has the absolute potential to go on to become the most commercially successful track they’ve ever made if they play their cards right. Regardless, they’ve given YOU something for the soundtrack of your own life with this final track, and the ultimate reason to immediately want to return to Neo Blastic for another spin immediately.
