PINKCOVA – “PINKCOVA”

PINKCOVA – “PINKCOVA” – Single Review
Alrighty…so…our friend here is looking for honesty…which is how you know he’s new to our pages.
For the record, that’s never an optional thing anyone would need to request – it’s the standard here.
And it starts right away. I think ALL-CAPS is always a weird choice that doesn’t stand out nearly as much as people assume it would, because it’s become so overused…and self-anthems where you use your name as the title of a song are something I’ve railed against for years & years. How’s that for honesty?
Welcome to our pages PINKCOVA!
Okay…let’s get to what we really want to know about, not just me flexing my natural gruffness. What do I think about PINKCOVA’s “PINKCOVA?” I’ll say this to start – I love the music that he’s working with – it’s sensational stuff…inventive, colorful, innovative, and even a little jazzy…kind of like a whole collage of great things you wanna hear, and potentially, I think there’s room to hear a little bit more of it. I look at it this way…the dominant traits of what you hear in the mix, are the drums, the saxophone, and the vocals. With respect to the music, everything else that’s involved in the production has room to come up a bit and stand out more than it currently does…and that might not be a bad idea. At high volumes, you notice the extra elements that provide the melody more, and at lower volumes, if you’re playing “PINKCOVA,” you’re really only going to hear the beat, the sax, and the vocals…that’d be it. So that’s the difference really…and I suppose all I’m saying is that you don’t want anyone to get the impression that there’s only drums happening when there are so many other great things going on too. Feel free to turn up those surrounding elements in the song PINKCOVA, because those are all a part of what makes this great to listen to, and you want those enticing island/cultural vibes to be enhanced a little more to accentuate the bright & colorful sound.
I love the personality on display from PINKCOVA the moment we hear his voice – dude’s charming, and I think there’s a ton of value in that. His quick Spoken Word style introduction presents a very endearing side of his sound right off the bat, and I feel like that first impression counts significantly as we listen to this particular song. As for the vocals when he starts to sing…I’m a little bit split on how I feel about it. On the one hand, I personally appreciate the uniqueness he has – PINKCOVA sings with a wild amount of vibrato in his vocals…so much in fact, that it’s rare to the point that you’d practically never find too many comparable sounds in other singers out there. Uniqueness, as we all know, is something that can easily work both for, and against you. Where I’m hearing an artist with their own sound and can fully appreciate the value in that in the long run, I also know that others will hear the constantly fluctuating sound of PINKCOVA’s voice and struggle with that. That’s the effect of hearing something new to your ears…we resist more naturally than we accept. Think of how many times a band or an artist that you love has put out something new, and you’re not convinced you like it as much as the old stuff – that’s the same effect. Yet, as you continue to spin your way through the new stuff, and your ears become ready to expect what they hear, they start to adjust…and the next thing you know, you’re addicted to a bunch of songs you weren’t even sure you liked only days before. So…I suppose that’s my way of telling PINKCOVA that acceptance to his style of singing ain’t just gonna happen overnight, but those that get it right away will love it, and those that don’t, could likely come around…it just might take time is all. As for the tone and whatnot, PINKCOVA is spot-on, and clearly the dude can sing very well. When it comes right down to it, whether we like what he’s doing on not, the technique required to sing the way that he does is freakin’ staggering y’all. No joke, most people couldn’t sing the way that PINKCOVA does even if they tried to. Sadly that doesn’t instantly equate to making a connection with listening ears, so there is a risk to going the route he’s taking with his vocals. I also think that, in the context of this one song, the masses should be able to accept the stylistic choices he’s making…but on a full album, I’m not so sure. I suppose I look at vocals like any other instrument…diversity is really the key and you wanna make sure that over the course of time, you switch things up. For one song though, or a couple, this is all effective.
As far as the chorus and the structure are concerned…the emotional impact and such…I’ll put it to you this way – the song is good, but it’s the personality of PINKCOVA that is truly the X-factor at work here. Am I going to remember any specific lyrical line in this song six months from now? Probably not. Will I remember the main hooks? Possibly. Will I remember who PINKCOVA is and what he sounds like? Absolutely, 100%, YES. That right there folks, is the power of identity and uniqueness. And that’s all I’ve been saying throughout this review…the same uniqueness that could seem like an obstacle at first to some, is still going to be the most valuable asset in the long run. Look at it like this – I guarantee after this one single experience with PINKCOVA’s music, I would recognize his sound, style, and personality in any other song that had him on it – and most artists go their entire career searching for that kind of tangible identity without ever even scratching the surface. What matters to me, especially at the start of a career, is that an artist charts a course where they can successfully navigate through being sucked into the sea of sameness, and PINKCOVA is an exceptional example of how to do exactly that. There’s confidence in this dude’s voice, with just as much humbleness to go along with it…that all adds up to the kind of artist that can connect to the hearts and minds out there. If there’s one line that stands out to me, it’s probably where he sings “shelter from pain” – I not only think it’s one of the biggest hooks in the song that’d fly right by most people listening because it occurs for such a short amount of time, but in terms of the emotional impact we’re talking about, it’s moments like that were you really hear the sincerity of his voice more than you notice the technique, you feel me? I think of it like this…he’s looking for honesty…and so am I…and in that one tiny fragment of his song, you’ll find more truth than you will in any other moment, as well as what could very likely be the blueprint to his success in the future to follow. The more natural he’s sounded, I feel like the more easily he’s made a connection to us as we listen…stylistic choices are great and they can be a whole lot of fun…but at the end of the day, when you strip all that away, it’s crucial to know you’ve still got a capable artist at the core of it all. While we might not get too much of a glimpse of PINKCOVA’s natural singing voice compared to the one he uses throughout the majority of this song with the extra vibrato & such, what little we do get to hear reveals that no matter which direction he chooses to go in, whether it’s the stylistically inclined direction or a more organic one, he’s got a genuine authenticity to him that shines through every note he sings.
At the end of the day, you can hear he’s got a real connection to music & desire that can’t be faked, and I’d expect those ingredients to carry the majority of the weight as he continues to establish himself out there in this music scene we share. Lots of potential here, and the guy behind the mic seems grounded & real. I’m into it PINKCOVA – now keep going, and let’s see how far you take it.
