Mista J – Blue – EP Review

LOOK OUT BELOW Y’ALL…Mista J is doin’ a straight-up CANNONBALL into the pool with a record like Blue, ready to make waves like you weren’t expecting from start to finish with this extremely stellar EP.

For real…I don’t think I’m going to be alone in my assessment here.  As “Caribbean Eyes (Barefoot Dubstep)” started up the record, all I could think about was what a pure freakin’ JOY it was to listen to.  And if I’m feeling that way, I know there will be many, many others out there that will too.  I’ve talked a lot throughout the years about the crucial importance of how a first impression & gateway in can truly be, and there might be no finer example of what I’ve been getting at all this time than to listen to the radiant sound that “Caribbean Eyes (Barefoot Dubstep)” lays on ya.  To call it fun simply ain’t gonna cover it.  To capitalize FUN will get it closer to the mark and emphasize the point I’m making, but even that still doesn’t come close to capturing the essence of what we’re really talking about here.  You’re just going to have to accept the mediocrity of my limited vocabulary and font sizes until you GET OUT THERE AND LISTEN FOR YOURSELF!  You can thank me later.  It honestly is tough to describe the impact a track like this makes as an opener though…perhaps the best way I can put it is to simply explain how memorable “Caribbean Eyes (Barefoot Dubstep)” really is, and how it’ll send you running like a rabid dog back for another spin.  It’s filled to the brim with fresh and vibrant sounds that’ll entice your ears into listening, and a spirited energy that can’t be denied.  It’s got this rubbery, bendable sweetness to it that will absolutely impress you from beginning to end.  It was to the point where, when I looked at the lineup to follow and saw the original version of “Caribbean Eyes” at the end of the EP, all I could think about was the enormous shoes it would have to fill based on this first impression, but so too would ANY song on the record to come after it, you feel me?  Tracks as appealing as Mista J’s “Caribbean Eyes (Barefoot Dubstep)” are an extraordinary rarity & a VERY tough act to follow, but if there’s a song that’ll have you more than interested in what might come next, this is the one.  And that folks, is what you want your gateway track to be, precisely.  You want it to supply your listeners with EVERY reason under the sun to continue listening…to generate excitement and universal appeal…this opener does ALL that.

As “Breathe In (The Salt Air)” took over on the playlist next, I quickly realized just how much TROUBLE we’re all in…because there isn’t too much else that I’d prefer to listen to than what’s happening at the beginning of the Blue EP.  Mista J, where have you been all my life?  Good lord…the wild degree of pure sensory sound is STAGGERING y’all…it’s like Mista J has the recipe of how to reach right into your brain and stir up your noodle with stimulating vibes you won’t have a remote chance of resisting.  Like, you regular readers know my level of enthusiasm already here I’m sure…you’re reading my excitement through ALL-CAPS shouting…and you know exactly how I feel about finding an amazing song like “Caribbean Eyes (Barefoot Dubstep)” & what that means for the material to follow.  For those of you that are just reading my reviews for the very first time (I mean, where have you been hiding all this time?), you know that whatever was going to follow an opening track as sensational as this EP has, should basically pale at least a little bit by comparison, if not a lot.  Yet…somehow…that’s not the case at all, and it appears that Mista J has achieved what’s basically impossible – I don’t know that I actually have a preference between “Caribbean Eyes (Barefoot Dubstep)” and “Breathe In (The Salt Air)” – and like…HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?  To say the energy in this second track is addictive is to put it as mildly as anyone ever could…I don’t just need to “Breath In (The Salt Air)” at this point in my life now, I need THIS SONG like I NEED OXYGEN – you feel me?  The production is MAGNIFICENT…the vocals it has are genuinely brilliant…the sheer degree of catchiness and compelling sound is second to none.  Right now, I’m tellin’ ya…I’m feeling like the Blue EP is the real vibe we’ve all been searching for in 2026 so far.

I’m realistic…and I’m relentlessly objective to a fault, as anyone that knows me well would tell ya.  I KNOW, for a FACT, that no artist under the sun could keep such an incredible streak going throughout an entire lineup of songs, and to be truthful, in terms of the dynamics of how a record works its magic on ya, I don’t even know if we could take a whole lineup of absolutely amazing material and absorb it in a way that would have us appreciating everything as much as we probably should in a circumstance like that.  At some point, the high has to come down, right?  As I listened to “Ocean Palms” I kind of laughed out loud to myself…like…as in, am I really supposed to report that this third track doesn’t quite have the same grip and gravitational pull that the opening two tracks have?  Do I REALLY feel that way?  Because believe me when I tell ya, I’ve had plenty of moments throughout this week in listening to the Blue EP where I’ve felt like “Ocean Palms” is just as incredible as the opening two tracks are.  It’s a different vibe for sure, but it DOES belong in the conversation about the best of the best on Mista J’s record.  I think that the first two tracks are likely built with two degrees of more accessible sound…maybe…but that’s about the most I’m willing to concede to you, because like I’ve said, I could have spins through the Blue EP where “Ocean Palms” was THE cut I’d be looking forward to the most.  Listen to the HOOKS in the music here will ya?  Listen to the outstanding use of pace and space as Mista J flips the script, pivots and shifts gears with remarkable fluidity…the perfect way that the vocals added into the mix & how essential that ingredient is to the overall success of a song like “Ocean Palms” and the irresistible hazy feeling it creates…I’m beyond impressed.  Like…everything I love about the band Mellowdrone is in here, but it feels like it’s got such BOUNCE and refreshed energy to it, that I can’t deny how Mista J has built on a style of sound I genuinely love so much & taken it beyond the next level, straight into the stratosphere.  The hot streak logically has to end at some point…but I’m just not convinced it does with “Ocean Palms.”

Now…for myself personally…I think “To Florida” is where I finally felt like Mista J put on the brakes a bit, and even in that instance, I could still argue that he really hasn’t at all.  I mean, “To Florida” is pumping out a party vibe that SO MANY listeners will respond to.  It has a more noticeably laidback sound that is 100% by design, but even in that respect, it’s not like Mista J isn’t still movin’ & groovin’ y’all.  What I felt was genuinely impressive about this whole track was that it still felt like it belonged on the Blue EP, even after feeling like it does shift the sound in a different direction than where this experience had all began.  We’re not talking about anything so monumental in that respect…we’re talking about a logical step out towards the fringe of what was always possible in terms of where the direction of sound could have gone on this record, and I truly feel like it was a smart move on Mista J’s behalf.  Like, I could easily make an argument on behalf of “To Florida” possessing a more broadly appealing level of accessibility when it comes to the masses out there, because that very well might be the case.  I know that the first three tracks are what speak to me more strongly than this fourth track does, but I don’t think that how I feel is exactly how YOU will feel.  You might get to “To Florida” in this lineup of six tunes and feel like this is THE track of all tracks…and with the consistency of quality that Mista J has put into all of these songs, who would I be to disagree with ya?  What if you were on your way “To Florida” for a vacation when you heard this song for the very first time?  It would instantly become THE anthem for your whole trip!  I’ll say this…it’s got that slight hint of a reggae vibe to it, but it’s a clever part of this song that’s much more like an accent to its NuPop sound…and personally, I dig that.  Listening to Mista J hit the most aggressive moment of “To Florida” around the 1:40 mark is special too…like, you can hear what a megahit this could easily be with listeners and an audience in front of the stage…the potential for this song & where it could go might definitely end up being one of the most delightful surprises on the whole EP.  It’s like, not quite Sublime, and it’s not quite The Planet Smashers either…”To Florida” hits the sweet spot in between.  Mista J hasn’t dropped the quality of his sound one iota…it’s merely a matter of personal taste and what you connect with in the music you listen to, and that’s always beyond anyone’s control.

Like, I could take the stance that “I Feel” is a further stretch to include into this lineup than “To Florida” is if we’re talking about the sound the record first started with…but I’m not gonna do that.  Instead, I’m just gonna tell you that “I Feel” is an exercise in absolutely SPECIAL sound, and I wouldn’t want a version of Blue that didn’t have this tune on it – so take that!  Umm…yeah.  We’ve heard some undeniably amazing material on this EP so far, and yet, somehow here we are, five tracks deep into Blue and still experiencing more.  Mista J, you’re superhuman dude.  “I Feel” is one of those highlight moments where time around you just stops…and you listen.  You don’t just hear a track like this, you listen to its every move…you FEEL every ticking second of it.  From the smart & subtle beat it possesses, to the vocals that will steal the show, to the outro that gives you that same feeling like when you walk out from the theater of a matinee movie into the midday sun…this is powerfully spellbinding stuff to listen to, and an effort that should very much be encouraged for Mista J’s future to follow.  I think we all understood that upbeat vibes were in this guy’s wheelhouse immediately as we checked out the Blue EP…but to create something this exquisite and sonically gorgeous – on the same record no less – is an achievement in and of itself.  Like, there WILL be people that were massively impressed by what they heard at the start of the Blue EP, who will get to “I Feel,” and decide they can’t go back to the happy, upbeat vibes we hear at the start, because that’s honestly how stunning this song truly is.  The smart swell of the low end’s undertones are beautifully laced into this song…the gentle restraint of the percussion is wonderful, and the vocals you’ll find on “I Feel” are simply award-worthy, full stop.  If there’s something that Mista J could have done better on this track, I’m not hearing it.  For as different as this track is from the rest of the set, to not consider “I Feel” to be amongst the best of what you’ll find on this EP would be criminal.

And so here we are…we’ve come back around full circle, to the original version of “Caribbean Eyes” to finish things off on Mista J’s brand-new EP.  Most noticeable difference?  Hmm…I mean…just about ALL of it if I’m being real with ya – the vocals essentially end up playing the starring role on this track in this version…and as much as I thought I might be fairly resistant to that approach…good gravy-boat lighthouse – HOW is this song STILL amazing in a whole different version?  The hooks still hit the bullseye like Robin Hood splitting the arrow, and the vocals burry themselves into this track like they were meant to be included all along.  Which, I mean, clearly they were…it’s the original version of the song and all…but then like, in realizing that, you have to recognize how bold of a decision it was to take them OUT of “Caribbean Eyes (Barefoot Dubstep)” to begin with, and let that instrumental version be our first impression of this song!  Believe me when I tell ya, we’ve all experienced multi-versions of tunes before in what we listen to, and it can often be the first one that reaches our ears that determines the success of the rest, or whether a subsequent variation can even make a similar impact on us at all.  I’m more than proud to report that “Caribbean Eyes” more than stands on its own as a great track for a plethora of additional reasons beyond why we all responded to its instrumental form at the start, with the extra party-mode vibe included into the original being one of the most prevalent you’ll find.  It might give the song a more like…typical design I suppose, if you’re looking at it from a verse/chorus/verse type of perspective I suppose…but like…at the same time, if you were able to create a song that would get the whole place singing along with ya, you’d take that opportunity every single time, wouldn’t you?  That’s what “Caribbean Eyes” transforms into, right before our ears in this second version we hear on the Blue EP.  It’s a whole second life for the song if I’m being real with ya – and that MATTERS.  How many times have you seen me write a review on these pages are, calling someone out for including a song twice, because in 99.9% of the cases, that’s a recipe for burning out your best track twice as fast…but that’s not the case here.  With how decidedly different each version of “Caribbean Eyes” is, you get something entirely unique out of both, yet the connection you’ll find to what you love still somehow exists in each version too.  It’s not an easy thing to accomplish dear readers, dear friends…but there’s a very good chance that Mista J has created TWO of your new favorite songs out of ONE.  Any way you slice it though, from the phenomenal quality that exists from the very get-go with its digital vibes at the start, to the fantastic record scratches happening at the end, the Blue EP is undoubtedly one of the best of 2026 so far, and you’ve gotta assume the beginning of a truly groundbreaking year for Mista J’s music.
