Maya Mendez – “Through And Through” – Single Review

The verdict is good!

All-in-all, I’m not hearing any reasons to worry about Maya Mendez…she’s on solid ground.  I mean, I can hear in the lyricism of “Through And Through” that there WERE reasons to worry about her before now…but from what her words will tell you in her brand-new single, she’s come out stronger on the other side of heartbreak, as so many of us tend to do.  It’s life man.  Experience.  Sadly, we don’t get to pick the path we end up on as specifically as we like to think at times.  One minute you’re happier than ever, the next you realize you’re stuck in the middle of a relationship that isn’t working at all.  What Maya is describing in her lyrics for “Through And Through” is one of the tougher parts of growth and evolution…the kind where you end up wiser in retrospect…where you break the spell at long last and you regain the freedom you once had after finally creating the separation from toxicity you really need.

So…yeah…I mean…it’s definitely relatable, ain’t it?  Who amongst us has been lucky enough to escape from this kind of heartbreak in their lifetime?  It’s one of the most consistent and constant themes that you’ll find in any corner of the music scene in practically every genre under the sun for that very reason – everyone in the audience and everyone listening knows precisely what you’re singing about when it comes to brokenhearted tunes.  There’s a catharsis that takes place on both sides of the speakers in that regard.  As the creator/songwriter, Maya gets to work through the process of healing in real-time and get the things she really needs to say outta herself through a song…and as listeners, we respond to a message & feeling that powerfully resonates in our hearts & minds, because we’ve pretty much all been there ourselves at one point.  Whether you’re the person breaking up with the other, or the person being broken up with, there are no real winners when it comes to the loss of love during that specific moment…it’s not until later on down the road where you realize that you might actually be better off.

In any event, she sounds strong & sincere, in control and ready to share her side of the story on “Through And Through.”  The music she’s got in this single is highly effective…a fairly simple guitar strum alongside a killer low-end groove and the gentlest percussion added in you almost don’t even realize it’s there – but every individual ingredient possesses its own dynamics that give her plenty to work with as she sings, and serves a purpose in the overall results.  Vocally, again, there are no glaring concerns here – Maya’s voice is stunning for the most part, and I felt like the most demanding moments in the song where where she was able to rise to the challenge and get the best out of her voice.  Lyrically, she’s got a great song on her hands here when it comes right down to it and she might flash the most potential through that aspect of “Through And Through.”  For the vast majority of this song, she says exactly what she wants to say, exactly as she wants to say it – and that’s kind of crucial at this stage of music’s history & love-songs…we’ve all heard plenty of’em, so saying things just like everyone else would say’em isn’t going to help ya, you feel me?  Mendez is able to avoid that trap throughout 95% of this single and very rarely seems to say things in ways you’ve already heard before, and believe me, I appreciate that and I’m sure that you will too.  She’s got rhythm, she’s got style, she’s got excellent timing, and again, I feel like she’s made spectacular use of the dynamics within the music to pivot, pause, and shift her vocals as she sings her way through this song, which gives every word the opportunity to truly be heard.  Beyond that, she gets bonus points for describing her former lover as “artificial unintelligent” – that’s brilliant.

So heck yeah…I’ve got no qualms about giving this single a green light – I’d listen to more from Maya anytime based on this experience.  I mean…hopefully the next time it’s under happier circumstances for her…but even if it wasn’t, rest assured I’d sit and listen to her sing about heartbreak without hesitation.  She’s got a sincere perspective in her songwriting, a great voice to go along with it, and I feel like these two ingredients alone already give her all the advantages she’s going to need when going forward from here.  Because that’s the real beauty of heartbreak & such…we know the pitfalls of love are inevitable and they’re going to happen to almost every single one of us at some point in our lives – but it’s what you do in the aftermath that counts for so much more.  It’s not about the fact you can’t see the big picture of the puzzle anymore…it’s about how you pick up the pieces to create something even greater.  When you hear a song like “Through And Through,” you know that Maya’s going to be just fine.  A little time, a few singles like this one to get it all outta her system, and she’ll be as right as rain, as they say.

She’s got all the right pieces she needs to succeed, and confidence you can hear growing within this very song as she sings it.  Maya’s not just going to be okay – she’ll go on to thrive in her best years ahead.
