Katie Belle – “Bad Dreams”

Katie Belle – “Bad Dreams” – Single Review
Why can’t everyone out there make reviewing music this easy on me?
Alright…don’t get it twisted – I know the answer to that question a lot better than most probably do. It’s pretty simple really – not everyone out there has the talent of Katie Belle or a song that’s this perfect. I mean, yes, life would theoretically be easier from a ‘work’ perspective if everyone’s material was THIS bulletproof…but I’ll admit, I’d probably miss the ups and downs and bizarre characters we meet along the way. Lest we forget, it’s really by comparison to the thousands upon thousands of artists and bands that I’ve heard along the way that informs my ears and tells me KB is a cut above the rest in the scene.
No joke folks…if we’re talking about Electro/Dance/Pop music…I’d be hard pressed to think of a song that has come out more balanced than “Bad Dreams” this year. A prime example of what it sounds like to knock a song straight outta the park, Belle has got every ticking second of her new single dialed right in to a completely seamless fit. There’s nothing I’d dare to change in this song, and there’s nothing else that I’d advise Katie to do other than exactly what she’s doing right here – “Bad Dreams” is as flawless as a song can potentially ever be. A true case of everything going right, you can peel back the corner of any part of this song to take a closer look at it, but I promise ya, all you’re gonna find is an artist that is as refined as she is ready to roll straight to the number one spot on playlists all around the globe in 2025.
But let’s do it anyway, shall we? Let’s try to at least figure out what the main draw is on “Bad Dreams” and if it really comes down to any one particular element, or if this is just a seriously perfect storm of everything awesome. From the moment that “Bad Dreams” started out with its muted music, I was already interested. I mean, you know it’s not going to stay muted, so the fact that you can already hear its potency & appeal is more than enticing, because you know it’s about to spring to life with a wild new level of vibrant energy, which is precisely what it goes on to do. The music sounds fantastic – not too much, not overstuffed…honestly, there’s a real argument to be made that Katie has done a whole lot with what’s relatively a little in the sound supporting her. I’m a fan of moments like this, because it really has you listening…the music still has a presence without a doubt and there ain’t no song without it – but at the same time, it’s not necessarily the part of this song that takes the center of the spotlight. So that leads us to look towards Katie herself of course, whose vocals definitely deserve to be mentioned in the list of the ultimate reasons to tune into “Bad Dreams.” Could she do anything any better than she has in her performance on this song? If she could, I haven’t heard it myself – from my perspective, Katie nailed this down as tight as it could possibly ever be done, and she should be mighty proud of that. Is there room for like…you know…maybe one of those huge Pink or Christina-esque notes somewhere in here? Maybe. Hard to judge something on what it doesn’t have though, especially when it has everything it should to keep you 100% engaged at all times, you feel me? In my personal opinion, Belle has given “Bad Dreams” absolutely everything it needed, and used a real professional level of restraint to ensure it didn’t go overboard by doing anything that wasn’t entirely necessary. So really, what you’re hearing is Pop driven by purpose & passion, with an artist at the center of it all that knows her sound inside & out, that is capable of delivering a perfect performance that contains a fluidity water would be jealous of. Does that mean Katie’s got the edge over the music in terms of the reasons to tune in to her single “Bad Dreams?” I think it’s fair to say that one couldn’t exist without the other…sometimes you’ll find an artist just finds a sonic environment that suits them in ways you’ve never heard before, and they just thrive harder than you’ve ever heard’em do. This is my first experience with Belle’s music, so I’ll let you longstanding fans be the ultimate judge of all that, but to me, listening to “Bad Dreams” was totally like hearing an artist in their element at the top of their game. From what I can see online, she’s got more than a decade of experience under her belt at this point in her career, but make no mistake, even with that much time spent immersed in her music, it’s still rare to end up with a song this well-executed – bands/artists can go through their entire careers & not produce something as perfected as this truly is.
You can continue your quest to find a crack in her armor, but you won’t find it. I was thrilled with her music the last time I reviewed it back in 2023 for a song called “Symptoms,” but she’s gone on to exceed any of the wildest hopes and expectations I could have had with his new single. Lyrically, “Bad Dreams” is stellar. Hooks-wise, it’s powerfully clever in how it’s structured to deliver, and uses the dynamics of the song’s sleek movement & radiant production to Katie’s advantage at all times. You’ve really gotta hand it to her – this is a relevant sound with smart songwriting, and a performance that demands to be listened to. Heck, I’d go as far as to say that Katie might have THE song that can’t be ignored in 2025.
So, you see what I’ve been getting at all along – Katie Belle is on a completely different level than the rest with “Bad Dreams,” and reveals such an extraordinary wealth of X-factor talent that it’s like the proverbial embarrassment of riches. Mark my words…this incredible lady is clearly still well on her way UP, with her best years as an artist right there in front of her. I genuinely love this single – you will too.
