Hmmmmm…

What’s the right word to describe this new song from Guile Rush?

Triumph?  That would work.  Achievement?  Definitely qualifies.  Emotionally potent?  No…that’s two words, otherwise it would fit.  Spellbinding.  Maybe that’s it…but maybe I still like triumph more…

I’ve been keeping an ear on Guile Rush for at least a couple of years now, and lemme tell ya, this dude knows his way around how to go about writing an absolutely killer song.  I felt like he was onto something special back in 2024 when I reviewed his song “Unholy Dead,” and in behind the scenes here, I’ve had the privilege of listening to a couple of other tunes along the way if I recall correctly.  While everything I’ve heard so far has been better than good, this new single of his completely blew me away.

There’s an extraordinary attention to detail that Rush takes to his songs…to the point where you can tell that the man won’t release anything until he feels he’s got the most out of the moment’s potential, and I fully respect that.  In a world that has been driven mad by the release of constant content, Guile has seemed to take the opposite approach deliberately, with intention.  As a direct result of the careful approach he’s taken with his craft and the slower speed he’s taken with the release of his music, when Guile Rush puts out a new song, dedicated fans are certain to drop everything they’re doing to have a listen.  I know that’s exactly what I did when “Keep With Me” came my way, and my LIFE is better for it.

Seems like hyperbole, don’t it?  I get it.  Humans are prone to exaggeration, and what was once known as music journalism has largely become a circle jerk of flattery devoid of any real critical commentary or insight.  I know that’s the truth, because I’m here battling against that bullshit every single day.  Those of you that read these pages of ours regularly know that’s the mission I’m on, so take all that to heart when you’re reading these words of mine today – “Keep With Me” is not only the best song I’ve heard from Guile Rush to-date, it’s easily one of the best songs I’ve heard in the independent scene this year.

The craftsmanship is ASTOUNDING and the performance he puts in is award-worthy, full stop.  If Guile isn’t out there shopping “Keep With Me” around to different studios for placement on soundtracks, or submitting this tune to songwriting competitions and such, he might just be doing himself a disservice.  Mind you, I’m the first person that would tell you awards and accolades should be the last reasons you do anything in life – but that’s me.  If I were YOU, I’d be doing everything I can to get noticed.  Especially in a case like this, where you can hear the work, purpose, and intention is firmly behind every note you’ll hear.  Guile has written an incredible piano melody that perfectly suits his wonderfully desolate style of music, and he has put together an impeccably supportive background that includes robust bass tones, smartly placed percussion, and even a few strings in the mix to add an extra touch of drama along the way.  With what is, without question, the most extraordinary performance he’s put into his vocals that I’ve ever heard from the man, “Keep With Me” is a stunning example of how preparation and inspiration can lead to exquisite results when the opportunity to record comes around.  This isn’t a guy that’s just writing another song for his catalog that we’ll all forget about in a week or so – Rush’s approach to making music ensures the longevity of his songs, and his dedication to the art is entirely unmistakable.

From my perspective, this is precisely what it sounds like when everything is in its right place.  When I say words like spellbinding, achievement, and triumph, I’m not remotely kidding around – that’s exactly what this is.  Guile’s voice will send chills straight down your spine at the same time as it will make sure you’re sitting completely still, listening to every word.  So when he bends his melody out of the dark and into the light like he does around the forty-seven second mark of “Keep With Me” where he sings “that’s the memory of your hand in mine,” you don’t just feel it – it’s more like you can’t feel anything else.  He continues to shine brightly in his dusty songwriter’s style as the song plays on, lyrically, vocally, you name it & he’s nailed it – there’s simply nothing about this performance he’s put in that I’d ever dare to change.  His low-end vocals boom with emotion and provide a wonderful level of contrast to the sound of the piano…it’s a pairing of light & dark that can’t be beat, and it’s outright fascinating to listen to.  I love, love, LOVE how subtle his movements are throughout “Keep With Me,” and I’m amazed at how effective they are.  Subtle can often miss the mark.  Subtle can often end up being too boring or bring you close to a flatline in terms of the dynamics of a song.  None of that’s the case here.  In this particular instance, Guile’s subtle movements are revelatory moments in “Keep With Me” that will take your freakin’ breath away.  I could literally sit and listen to this single all damn day and never get tired of it.  I’m not just saying that – I’ve tested that theory so I could report back to you as honestly as possible.  I’ve sat here with “Keep With Me” on repeat for hours on end, and truly, it’s breathtaking from start to finish.  Kind of like something you’d expect to hear out of David Gray’s catalog with its powerfully emotional content and how it’s able to genuinely move you as you listen, albeit with the lower-end vocals that have been a signature staple of Guile’s tunes from day one.  Make no mistake though, there’s a similar magic between Gray and Rush in the way a song like “Keep With Me” will charm the socks right off of you, even as it presents itself as an experience that could easily be interpreted as equally devastating, depending on how you listen to it.  I think that’s what really makes it truly special – “Keep With Me” SHOULD be soul crushing…yet somehow, Guile has found this remarkable way to add just the slightest fraction of beauty into this single that highlights the authenticity in his songwriting and reveals a gift for heartfelt melody that’s practically unparalleled.  From the rasp in his voice in the finale, to the sincerity you’ll hear him sing with in the main hooks along the way, his new single is breathtaking.

For as much as I’ve written, trust me when I tell you, I’m actually speechless and genuinely in awe of what he’s created here.  “Keep With Me” is a song that will cling to your soul long after the music has stopped playing, and a moment in music that I know I’ll still be talking about for years & years to come.
