Ethan Davis – “Four Simple Words”

Ethan Davis – “Four Simple Words”

Ethan Davis – “Four Simple Words” – Single Review

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh – I see how it is!

Ethan Davis is putting all the music critics to the test by releasing a song he wrote and recorded for the FIRST DANCE IN HIS WEDDING to his new WIFE, Nicole.

So I guess there’s nothing else to say but great job, right?  What monster would say this is a bad song?

Well boy did you come to the wrong place partner – bad news is something I’ve trained myself to relay quite efficiently over the years.  So buckle up Mr. & Mrs. Davis…you might just be in for a bumpy ride.

Alright…there’s no need for me to keep them in suspense for too long, but yeah, I did want to make a point about how damn tough it would be for ANY reviewer or critic out there to say what they’d wanna say, given these extraordinarily sweet circumstances.  I’m not half the monster I pretend to be anyway, but even if I was, there’s not really all that much I’d think to criticize in a song that sounds like this does.  The facts are the facts – Ethan did an excellent job on “Four Simple Words,” and I can only imagine what that would be like to write a song for your own wedding!  Talk about pressure.  I’m just writing about it after the wedding, but Ethan had to present it right out in the open, in front of who knows how many guests, and of course, to the woman he’s chosen to spend his life with.  Lemme tell you this Mr. Davis – you don’t need my opinion, but I’ll happily give it to ya.  I’m quite certain you’ve already heard from the one and ONLY opinion that matters by now, and after having a listen myself, I’m absolutely sure that Mrs. Davis was more than pleased with it.  Who wouldn’t be thrilled about something THIS romantic?

I mean…sure…this COULD have gone totally south – I guess you never know.  Even under some of the best circumstances, all you can do is hope a gesture like this would be received in the way that you intended it to be, right?  Objectively, “Four Simple Words” is a quality song.  No joke – you regular readers know I’ve had to deliver the bad news to artists that have had terminal cancer in the past, so if I had something to say about this song, believe me, I’d clearly tell the guy.  The reality is, this is good tune – trust me when I say I’m totally relieved this happened to work out for Ethan.  Like…what if it didn’t?  All the paperwork is already signed by the time you get to the first dance…can you imagine that hearing this song was the moment where buyer’s remorse occurred?  How much of a nightmare would that be?

Instead, we’ve got a scenario where everything has worked out exactly as I’m sure Ethan envisioned that it would.  Let’s be real here – if he wasn’t sure he could pull this off, would he even have attempted it?  I’m not saying he might not still be THAT dude that pulls out the ol’ acoustic guitar at parties and such – he might very well be – but in THIS particular instance, I don’t think he could have done a better job.  It’s as admirable as it is adorable, and when you have a listen to it for yourself, you’ll know precisely what I mean in saying that.  Everyone in the room listening to this, watching the bride and groom dance would have had their freakin’ hearts melt right outta their chest!  Are you kidding me?  Who wouldn’t want a song written exclusively for them, and especially on their wedding day?  What a memory!  What an honor!  What an absolutely beautiful tribute, truly.  I can’t say enough about how sweet this really is.

What I am extremely THANKFUL for…is that this didn’t turn out cheesy, because writing this song would have been a fine line to walk and it could have easily happened to anyone attempting something like this.  Somehow, Ethan avoided all the potential pitfalls and schmaltz…and ended up with a song that’s not only great for the moment, but could very well last their lifetime, as intended.  He sounds great in both the music and vocals, and while there are multiple layers at work here, he made the right call by not overdoing it too, you know what I mean?  Like, I wouldn’t call it simple…not at all.  If anything, I’d tell you that Davis is clearly a gifted songwriter that completely understands how to give the moment everything that it’s calling out for, and wisely not an iota more.  I listen to a song like “Four Simple Words” and all I hear is a man pouring his heart out in the right, concise way to do it.  He didn’t end up embellishing anything foolishly – and as a result, he created a gorgeous tributary tune that toasts the love of his life perfectly.  “Grow old with me,” he requests, humbly & sincerely…and who could say no?  You’d have to be the aforementioned monster to resist giving into Ethan after listening to this song, and I just have this sneaking suspicion that the newly crowned Mrs. Davis, is indeed, no monster at all.

I love the guitar and how it sparkles…I love the…hmm…what is that, cello?  Probably cello.  That sounds great too!  The bass might be a tad up in the mix from where I might have been tempted to have it sit, but c’mon…we’re splitting hairs, aren’t we?  It’s still played well, and ain’t that really what matters?  Beyond all that stuff, the lyrics and the vocals came out shining with the sweetness and sincerity you’d have to have in a song like this for it to work.  Ethan nailed this, and I’m sure his wife Nicole told him so.

This would have taken real courage & guts to attempt, and I don’t think the results could have been any better than what you’ll hear.  I’m a big fan of love to begin with, but I’m just as big a fan of music too – so hearing a combo like this come out as spot-on as it has…well…what can I say?  It truly warms the heart in the most wonderful ways, and I salute this happy couple on their journey ahead from here.  With this song as their soundtrack, serving as a guiding mantra that will always remind them of the love they’ve shared and keep them grounded as to what’s really important throughout the years to come, I feel like “Four Simple Words” will be the reminder they need when things get tough, but also a guiding light that will help them avoid any trouble ahead.  As a guy that’s been with his own wife for twenty-one years and counting, believe me when I tell ya I could spot a fugazi from a mile away – the love that these two are sharing is as real as the two ears on your face that you’re using to listen to this very song y’all.

You’ll hear it in every word and every note along the way, I guarantee it.  Fantastic job on this Ethan.  All the very best to you & your lovely bride – I wish you nothing but the best as you build your life together.
