Dmighty – “Different Flows” / “Embrace”

Dmighty – “Different Flows” / “Embrace” – Singles Review
Yeah…ultimately, I’m cool with this.
Alright…so…couple of tracks here, and I’ve got many thoughts about’em. There’s one I like better than the other, and there’s one that I’d consider to be more of a complete track than the other one is. What I like about both cuts, is that you can hear Dmighty has the right kind of personality and skill to make this work. I also dig the fact that he’s got a great sense of what kind of beats to use to his advantage on a stylistic level – finding the right music to inspire a freestyle flow is just about the most crucial ingredient to be considered, and while I’d still tell ya I might lean towards one of these beats more than the other, at the core of each track is a competent man on the m-i-c that truly understands the dynamics of sound.
As I listened to “Different Flows,” I felt like anyone tuning in would be able to hear that Dmighty has got a solid grip on his timing, but perhaps even more importantly, that he knows how to bend the cadence of his voice to the kind of music that he’s working with, you know what I mean? I’m never going to be the guy that would tell you ‘everyone can rap’ – because that’s nowhere close to the truth…but at the same time, there are a whole bunch of emcees out there that can rap, but don’t make enough of a connection to the material in the music surrounding them. When you listen to how Dmighty mixes it up and switches into “Different Flows” as he raps in this single, what you’ll notice is that the tone of his voice & his energy remains a perfect pairing with the music – that’s what should tell you this guy has an excellent understanding of what makes great Rap work to its full potential. Many dudes can write a rhyme, and rap one out loud too for what it’s worth…but when you find an artist like Dmighty that gets how the words, the cadence, the tone, and the timing all play significant roles in being combined with the right beat…well…that’s when you know you’ve found someone that has found the keys to longevity. Believe it or not, it’s almost harder for rappers to break out of whatever they consider their signature style of flow to be, but the wiser artists out there will always prove that diversity wins the war, keeps it all interesting for them & for you, and switch things up in a variety of ways that genuinely suit the song. So hell yeah, when I was listening to “Different Flows,” I appreciated the fact that I could hear Dmighty doing several different things in terms of his approach to the mic…and listeners will appreciate that too. Of the two tracks, I’d personally consider “Different Flows” to be the more complete of the two…on a professional level, it’s the cut that’s more refined and ready to go. That doesn’t mean there aren’t still opportunities for Dmighty to step his game up – of course there are! Dude’s still well on the early side of his career in the grand scheme of things. Lots of time to continue to sharpen whatever skills he wants to…and that’s what it’s really all about y’all…there’s always another level to conquer. In this particular context, where he’s going freestyle, sure, there are lyrics that connect really well, and others that are significantly less impactful too…that’s a natural effect of thinking quickly about what will fit the rhyme scheme, as opposed to taking your time to write with purpose, intent, and meaning behind every syllable. Doesn’t mean that “Different Flows” isn’t still badass to listen to – honestly, I dig it – but it did also end up making me wonder what added potential Dmighty would have with more time to write out something and prepare, as opposed to hitting the mic more reflexively in how a freestyle is performed. I look at it this way though…if this really is all straight off the top of his dome, then he’s in great shape for the future ahead of him, and he’s armed with a deep bag of skills that will serve him well over the years.
Now…if you’re asking me which of these two tracks I probably enjoy more? It’s probably “Embrace,” which officially drops onto the internet tomorrow as far as I’ve been told. So you’re like…hours away from being able to dig into this cut for yourselves…count’em down, and hit the man up on Spotify & all that. Like I was tellin’ ya from the start, one of Dmighty’s most significant strengths is his selection of the beats – the music on “Embrace” is absolutely stellar, and to be real with ya, that might even be more than half of the appeal in this particular cut, from my perspective. Like I was also tellin’ you from the start though, one of these two tracks felt complete, and the other wasn’t quite there yet – and as you might have guessed by now, “Embrace” is the one that could probably still use a minute or two in the lab. I love the flow from Dmighty, and I think the sound of his voice is equally enticing here…he’s gone laidback-but-confident, hazy-but-bold, and it all fits perfectly with the sliding bass-lines that eventually get groovin’ in his latest single. Production-wise…not really hatin’ on it, but not really lovin’ it either. That’s all technical stuff that can easily be adjusted on the studio boards & such…take some of the air outta this track & whatnot…if that’s what he wants to do, of course. Rappers more often than not will leave a freestyle as it is, which is always risky in today’s world to a degree when there’s so much to listen to out there…but if Dmighty were to, say, use a freestyle like this as the blueprint for a studio version, I’d say he’d be onto something that could definitely go on to be something, you feel me? That being said, don’t go skimpin’ on us if that happens Dmighty…if you jump into the booth to create a more polished version of “Embrace,” then I want the other two or three minutes of this song that we DESERVE yo! At less than two minutes in length, this is like getting two bites of your favorite meal before you gotta leave the plate behind! Everything here is on the right track ideas-wise though…make no mistake, Dmighty is servin’ it up hot & fresh for ya…it ain’t my fault if he’s giving us just a taste that has us wanting MORE. Personality and precision remain the main assets in what he creates, and they shine even brighter on “Embrace,” in my opinion. Lots of solid positives going on with Dmighty…I feel like the more he keeps working on his craft and putting the time in, the more he’ll see exponential results in his own evolution.
