Deltiimo – “Ice Cream Buns” Feat. Jodie Vinall – Single Review

Well, it’s the right season for something like this I’d reckon.

As I’ve mentioned on these pages of ours many times before, we’ve all gotta write about something.  Why not ice cream?  Why not ice cream…buns?  Sure!  I have no idea what those are, but again, why not?  It beats another song about chicks and cars, or another variation of a love song we’ve heard in some way, shape, or form, doesn’t it?  So bring on the “Ice Cream Buns” in the heat of summer I say!

Look…I’ll be real with ya…I’m probably neither here nor there with the lyricism in this tune…I don’t really have too much of an opinion on the words here, nor do I think that was Deltiimo’s main priority either.  Ultimately we’ve got a single that’s designed to be catchy for its vibe and its vocal hooks, and none of that is dependent on words that are going to make you have to think all that much.  Unless you’re still pondering what the heck “Ice Cream Buns” would be counts, in which case, yeah…ponder away and send me over a message when you figure out what the heck they are and where the heck you find’em.  You get the point I’m making I’m sure – summertime songs are often built and designed for the fun of it, and especially within the Electro/Pop realm…sometimes it’s best to not overthink things and just go with it instead, you know what I mean?  If you’re looking for deep, meaningful lyricism, you’re probably not going to find that here, but that doesn’t mean it should stop you from listening, right?  Different songs for different moments…that’s what building the soundtrack of your life is all about to begin with, and just because the words might appear to be fairly surface-level stuff doesn’t mean Deltiimo isn’t onto something.

Look at it this way…in terms of what we typically regard as single-worthy songs, “Ice Cream Buns” ain’t lacking for anything at all.  In fact, I can pretty much guarantee that after only ONE spin through this song, you’ll already be singing the main hook around the house…that’s how memorable it is.  You know how tough it is to create truly memorable material?  Even some of the greatest artists and bands you can think of would tell you that doesn’t just automatically happen…you’ve gotta have some genuine craft to engineer those kind of results.  Credit where credit is due, Deltiimo understood the assignment & went to work – and here we have a warm & dreamy vibe that celebrates your favorite frosty treat.

He’s also brought in another excellent voice to introduce you to – Jodie Vinall, who adds personality and charm to the list of ingredients of this audible enjoyment…and I felt like she was a perfect fit into a song like this one.  Together, the get the maximum potential out of the vocal hooks, the melody, and the music combined…and hey, you can’t really ask for all that much more than that, right?  But wait – there IS more fun to be had!  What about the crazy fun of the fantasy-based AI video that comes along with it?  I freakin’ LOVE what Deltiimo has arranged for the visuals…honestly, it’s great…and having something that’s so clearly out of this world completely supports how we’re not supposed to take a song like “Ice Cream Buns” too seriously.  It’s supposed to be every bit as fun as it is, so put your tea leaves and tarot cards away, and lighten up a little bit – “Ice Cream Buns” is the kind of summertime tune that’s designed to be a pure dose of escapism, and we can all use a little bit of that in our lives.  Beyond all that good stuff, I think you’ll find that “Ice Cream Buns” is every bit as consistent to the high standards of quality that Deltiimo has always revealed through his work in terms of production and the mix…he’s got the whole song sounding great, and not that Jodie needed any additional help in sounding awesome, but he’s also got her voice sitting perfectly within the music as well.  Everything in its right place, as it were.

I think the real question here, is do we like the song or the video better?  Not like we have to choose, but it’s kind of fun to think about.  All-in-all, while I wouldn’t say one necessarily needs the other, both the song and the video are enhanced by having each other…it’s like exponential enjoyment, and I’m here for it.  I might not be able to make sense outta “Ice Cream Buns” as a concept, unless we’re talkin’ about how a word like ‘cake’ ended up taking on its own different meaning over the past couple years, but I really don’t think understanding anything is what dictates how much we enjoy something – you follow me?  Everything I’m hearing, and seeing, really feels like Deltiimo and Jodie could very well have THE summer hit to be found in 2025…it’s so far out there and so unapologetically designed for good times that I could absolutely see this single going straight up to number one and can easily imagine that there could be a time in the short future ahead that we won’t be able to go anywhere without hearing this song.  So that’s something, right?  I’m tellin’ ya…have a listen for yourself and you’ll know what I mean – Jodie and Deltiimo have made this track irresistible by every conceivable definition, and if they play their cards right, they might have a massive worldwide hit on their hands with “Ice Cream Buns.”
