I mean…if you read my previous review on Björn’s music from last year, you’d probably wonder how he ended up back on our pages again.  Is there anything else that can be said?  How about we take all the amazing things I said about the guy from the last time around, shut our eyes real tight, and pretend that I said’em all over again?  I see no real harm in that…it’d still all be true, and we could all save some time.

So look…what I’m really saying in my own roundabout way, is that while there are indeed a great many of you out there making music that keep me up at night, wondering how you’ll ever end up finding your way in this crazy industry – Björn ain’t one of’em.  The only limitations this guy would ever have would be the ones imposed on himself…every label, roster, and playlist within the instrumental realm would be more than happy to make room for Donath’s music.  Dude’s an exceptional talent…he proved that easily before when I was checking out singles called “Peace Within” and “Glow” at the very end of 2024, but just in case anybody needed further confirmation of this Björn’s tremendous talent, I’ve got great news for you – he’s still making music, and his latest single “Traveller” is another serious triumph to add to his growing catalog.  You’re going to encounter a whole lot of good players and great musicianship over the course of listening to music in your lifetime…there are lots of people that do things very well out there.  Again, Björn ain’t one of’em – this man ends up in a whole different category for measuring the skills of the superhuman.  Good and great aren’t even in this guy’s vocabulary – he plays a whole level beyond.

As to how you’d go about describing that…honestly…I don’t know.  I think the entire reason that guys like Björn play instrumental tunes to begin with is the fact that there are simply some things that can’t be said at all – but they can be expressed.  So for me to be here, trying to bash my head against the wall in an effort to think of the right things that I can say to describe how amazing a player like Donath truly is…maybe it was never possible to begin with, you know what I mean?  Maybe it takes a guitar player of his caliber to jam something out on an axe to accurately describe what it’s like to listen to Björn play.  I don’t know that words are equipped to say it all…and I guess that he would feel the same way given that he’s an instrumental guitar dude.  Anyhow.  I think you get the point – Björn is exceptionally gifted, and that extraordinary connection he has to the guitar shines through in the technique of every note and tone that emanates from his amplifiers.  Rocking the seven string electric, I don’t think I’d ever get tired of listening to this guy play, and the fact that we get to see it happen in the video for “Traveller” only seems to enhance the experience even more.  From the mellower parts of “Traveller,” to the gripping intensity he reaches as it plays on, watching Björn glide up and down the frets of his guitar is nothing but a treat if you ask me.  For those of you out there that wonder about what the difference is between someone that can play a guitar well, and a sonic virtuoso who is one with their instrument – Björn is a highlight example of an artist that feels the depth within every note and knows precisely how to get the maximum value out of each and every one that he plays.  Essentially, he doesn’t need words – they’d probably just get in the way…artists like Björn can speak through their instruments, with crystal clarity.

I’m a big fan of expressionism, and especially in a context like this, where the emotion involved is equally tangible.  You’ll ride along with Björn through the beautifully mellow & reflective parts of his melody, to the more blissfully inspired energy he presents as things get more complex and intricately involved on “Traveller.”  What I really like about the way that Björn plays, is that even when it’s a more low-key moment in his music, you can visibly see from the video, that the level of passion he put into every note never drops.  He’s invested in everything he plays, and as a result, we can see that when he performs & hear it clearly in his music.  The level of intention, purpose, and passion you’ll find behind each part he plays is pretty much outright staggering…to the point where I imagine Donath will go on to be recognized in the same breath as the very best of the best in the guitar realm.  He’s still going to face the same uphill climb that all instrumental artists have to reckon with – it’s always harder to get songs that the masses can’t sing along with into the mainstream and it always will be – but I like to think that when you’re encountering a skill level such as what Björn has, we all universally marvel at it & recognize the superhuman amount of talent you’d have to possess in order to do all that he does.  He’s got the X-factor and there’s no doubt about that…it’s a pure joy to watch and hear him play, and I firmly believe that we’re still just scratching the surface of how incredible Donath will prove he can be over the years to follow.  If the guitar world hasn’t fully clued into how amazing this guy is yet, we’ll be proud to be among those ahead of the curve in introducing his music to the people out there – Björn Donath is the kind of guitar player you will always find the time to listen to, and in return, he’ll dazzle you with what he creates as he continues to discover remarkable new ways to communicate through his instrument of choice.  “Traveller” is another exceptional guitar-based song by every definition – that’s the standard – I guarantee you that everything Donath creates will always be well worth your time to listen to & turn UP.
