Alex Woburn – “Ecstasy”

Alex Woburn – “Ecstasy” – Single Review
Let’s have a listen and see what Alex Woburn has been up to, shall we?
Okay…so…to start, this dude has got more energy put into this 2:47 than I spend in an entire year. Hear me out…I COULD go and pour myself a fresh cup of coffee this morning, OR, I could just put on “Ecstasy” and let this beat work its magic on me instead – this is the audible equivalent of several pots of coffee, never mind a couple of cups. Dude’s got himself a caffeinated vibe goin’ on with this new single, mind you, the title of course implies we’re talking about a different source of stimulation than mere coffee!
“Why do I keep going back when the contents are bad?” I mean…I’ll answer this from the perspective of a guy that has spent more than a few minutes of his life munching all kinds of pills himself – because it FEELS FUCKING FANTASTIC Alex! That’s a tiny piece of the main hook that you’ll hear on “Ecstasy,” and yes, I get it…drugs are supposed to be bad for us…it was just never my personal experience. To me, they have always been a damn good time, or they served a purpose. Obviously, “Ecstasy” is much more of a party-mode drug than others that’ll have you learning too much about yourself, but sure, I spent time checking out what it had to offer and had a great time doing it. If you’re out there on the dance-floor all damn night long, dehydrating yourself from head to toe…then heck yeah, you’re gonna end up feeling more than a little rough the next morning, and it can take a minute or two to get back to a level where you don’t find yourself reaching for that extra chemical fun and a jolt of stimulation to get you through the day. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t been there…I like to think that a life well-lived will have you trying all kinds of things, right? Theoretically, we’re supposed to stop using “Ecstasy” at some point though, because…you know…honestly, I don’t know why. I guess the theory is that like any party you could ever be participating in, the morning eventually shows up, and we have to continue on with the rest of life? Aside from that, I mean…do what you wanna do as far as I’m concerned. Know what you’re doing of course – research that shit & make sure you know where it comes from, but sure, munch away friends. Because like Alex will tell ya, “the contents are bad” – or they can be if you’re not too careful I suppose. Like, they’re not gonna be found on the shelf at the local health food store, let’s put it that way, okay?
Anyhow. He’s got himself a quality cut here. It’s very Euro at its core, but don’t mistake the potential that “Ecstasy” has for widespread appeal on a way more global scale. I look at it this way – on a personal level, I like all of it, but I also love some of this single. The verses…I’m probably not going to get too attached to the relentlessly peppy beat and rapid-fire vocals…that’s the most Euro part of its design when it comes right down to it, and I’m not resistant to it for that reason so much as it’s just kind of a pattern and flow that you run into often in my line of work, where there’s not a whole lot of deviation from the original blueprint that was established long before Alex or I got here. What interests me a hell of a lot more is what Woburn goes on to create in the main chorus hooks, which are purely outstanding, and as addictive as the pills themselves can be when you first start your munching journey. For all of 2:47, “Ecstasy” freakin’ rips by faster than a weekend does before your Monday morning alarm goes off, and it’s perfectly symbolic of the substance that Alex is writing about. I’ll put it to ya this way – if I was still out there in the scene munching pills like I used to be, I’m 100% positive this single would be the soundtrack I’d be seeking out. How could it get any better than this kind of energy for that kind of drug?
Of course, Alex also relates the substance itself to the thrills of love and whatnot, which you can take for what you will…the highs of life are genuinely all comparable in a great many ways. Can love give you the same stimulation as the most potent pills out there can? Sure…I believe that on a fundamental level if I’m being honest with ya. Doesn’t mean you can’t still have a heck of a lot of fun and dip a toe in both worlds if you wanna. Of course, like the end of a high, love can turn on you too…you can easily overdose on that shit if you’re careless, just like any other drug…and even though it can be harmful to ya, you might just find yourself pounding on your dealer’s door looking for another round of emotional content that’ll give you a quick hit of endorphins and feeling good again. The chorus of “Ecstacy” is straight-up Electro-Pop perfection…or in Alex Woburn’s own category, self-described as Confessional-Pop…however you wanna label it, he’s really got an excellent track here where everything fits into a track that’s laser focused from start to finish. I might not like the verses or the bridge as much as the main hooks by a fairly large margin, but I’d still tell you that everything snaps together here like it was meant to be, and that the single-worthy vibes never stop coming atcha. The chorus and the breakdowns supply the biggest highlights by far in my opinion, but I can genuinely make a case for this whole track being something that you’ll want to have a listen to. Love that fully stripped-down break around the 2:05 mark, and of course, the bring-back becomes that much more effective as a result. Alex’s vocals are right on the money, the music is well-produced…he’s left you in the right situation where the only complaint anyone can make is simply their own personal taste & whether or not this is the kind of music they’d listen to, which is always beyond anyone’s control anyhow. What’s in his control, he’s nailed down as tight as tight can be, and if you’re a fan of stuff like you’d find in Aqua, or Canada’s own cartoon heroes in Prozzak, you’ll be a massive fan of “Ecstasy” for sure. I’m stoked to hear things going this well for Woburn. I put on this new single for the first time just the other day, and I knew right away that he was onto something. After taking this song for several spins on continual repeat as I wrote this up, trust me when I tell ya, the energy holds up strong and it shows no signs of any wear and tear. Munch your favorite substance, turn this up, click that repeat button, and keep the good times rolling along! Think of it this way…if they never stop, then you never really have to think about the bad times around’em, right? Fuck Mondays anyhow – keep your weekend going long and strong! Life’s way too short to spend your time worrying about the bad shit or the work week ahead of ya. Pro-tip – audible drugs like this very song don’t tend to come with a hangover no matter how much you ingest, so turn it up, and enjoy!
