S.e Elliott & That Awful Rhythm – “The Reverend Nor The Warden” – Single Review

Well…I suppose I’m gonna have to put up some protest here in reviewing this single, “The Reverend Nor The Warden…”

Don’t get me wrong…it’s not that I don’t love the song; the problem is that I DO! And I feel brutally misled by the name of this band as this kind of rhythm is EXACTLY what I’m in the mood for quite frequently; there’s nothing ‘awful’ about them…and yes I know that’s a tongue-in-cheek kind of title for a band, I get it, I get it…I’m just making a damn point about how awesome this band/song truly are.

I had a look…I wanted to find out if this band was coming from a similar area as modern-day act from the UK, Alt-J, who is creating a very similar vibe with their music. And, well…there’s a chance we could be on the right side of the water at the very least…looking them up I could pin them down to the Waterloo region, which to me slightly suggests the one found in the UK rather than others in the U.S.A., and even Canada, which I actually had no idea about existing. Who knew, we’ve got a Waterloo too!

Suck that, Dr. Seuss…

Sorry…back to That Awful Rhythm…or supposedly-awful one anyhow…

I really do get that hazy, swingin, sleepy, comfortable feel out of “The Reverend Nor The Warden,” and I think aside from Alt-J, there aren’t too many bands as successful in making this sound as exciting as they do here on this song. This is the exact kind of song you’d expect to hear in a show as dramatic as the Sons Of Anarchy in their famous montage scenes of tense, dramatic music.

With a gospel-choir like vocal rhythm backing up S.e Elliott as he brings a complex set of lyrics to full bloom through incredible choices, instincts and tone. It’s only singers with this ability that truly realize that words don’t necessarily need to rhyme if you can find the actual rhythm, and I absolutely love lyricists/vocalists that can see through the basic and into the beyond like S.e is here. Great tone on his voice, fantastic booming low-drums that keep the beat and an overall excellent combination of music resulting in a really killer single here from S.e Elliott & That Awful Rhythm; completed with a wicked straight-forward rant at the end of this cut…this has certainly been a memorable experience listening to this excellent band.

I think this single is fantastic, and I can only assume that there will be much more to come from S.e Elliott in the future to come. With rhythm and style like this, they’re going to be very hard to ignore…there’s enough catch & hook here to grab crossover fans like crazy, and who knows…maybe one day we see this up onscreen in a heavy courtroom drama and they spread like wildfire to the rest of the world. It’s my sincere hope that this band of talented visionaries are doing everything they can to get this music out there; I think this is music with incredibly widespread mass appeal.

Have a look and a listen right here below and judge for yourself! “The Reverend Nor The Warden” by S.e Elliott & That Awful Rhythm is a single-worthy song for sure…those hooks will pull you right in.
